    What’s going on here?

I noted my parents old house back box was wood, with Wylex printed on it, so not a DIY thing, and two red and a black wire could switch two lights.

    Ancient wiring

To comply with regulations since 1955 at least, only lamps with a filament bulb could be without an earth, and since 1966 only pendents. As to safety with a class II likely safe enough, but any inspection is likely to list it as a fault.

    Alcove lighting/LED strip advice

I look at my own and I want to improve it. I have never used the grate, it is there for emergency, should I have a problem with the oil fired central heating. The Labour government in 1978-9 resulted in wanting the ability to heat the home without electric. And the chimney is handy to put the...

    Integrated washing machines

When I have bought washing machines, it has always been in a hurry, as last one has failed, so being able to change them in a hurry makes sense. I looked at integrated models and not really integrated, you just have a deeper work top, Product Dimensions (HxWxD) (mm) - 825 x 600 x 540 and non...

Drayton Wiser 3 channel heating control

I see my HW is the same upstairs, downstairs and down steps. I have motorised valves as a legacy from when I did not have motorised TRV heads. And since down-steps is not used in winter, it suits, but top two floors both all TRV controlled. And has been that way since I started using motorised...

Drayton Wiser 3 channel heating control

Out of interest, wonder why a 3 channel hub was used? I did not want Wiser to control the DHW, my Nest Gen 3 already does that, so only fitted a single channel Wiser hub, connected in parallel to the Nest hub. I fitted Wiser, as I found the hall temperature was not representative of the house...

    EICR shenanigans five years later...

An EICR is an inspectors thoughts on the condition, and there is no requirement for him to use any codes. The codes are to help the person commissioning the report to understand how bad faults are and how fast they need rectifying, the law uses wording like "to determine whether or not that...

Secret nuclear bunker, how the information is presented.

Thanks, @JohnD yes got the name wrong. We did, it seems, have a telephone link using the railway line telephone, but now replaced with radio. As to Morse, never learnt it, only a few letters like O and S. And not up to 12 words per minute. I was more into packet radio.

Secret nuclear bunker, how the information is presented.

May be since I had worked in OpenReach exchanges, there was very little I had not seen before. It has been a long time since I have seen a teletext machine, don't know what replaced them? I know the fax machine does not produce legal documents, but teletext did, as the machines were installed by...

    EICR - RCD type

Yes it was, it should have said curve B not type B, but said type B on the box.

Whole house heating, or room by room?

The main house, we have 16 thermostats, 14 are TRVs, two are wall thermostats, and one of the TRVs can fire the boiler. I am still learning how to heat the home. Seems daft at 75, but every home has been different. My first house had hot air central heating, and I had no option but heat all...

    Domestic Aircon power supply

We have items which heat the house, which in winter is not a problem, but in summer is. So we have tried to reduce the heat output of equipment as much as possible, so our lights, TV, and many more items are today using switch mode power supplies and vastly reduce the power used in the home...

    Domestic Aircon power supply

Is it? I was led to understand it was to allow electrical heating of homes as WWII, the original used around 2.9 mm² cable, and no wasting on the live pins for extra insulation, and fused to 30 amps not 32 amps, so the original has been downgraded. But since originally designed for heating...

    Alcove lighting/LED strip advice

I have found, unless you can easily turn it on/off when entering or leaving the room, after 6 months never used. So my lighting is all WiFi connected, so a single voice command can turn it off, this often means it needs a fair bit of space and a socket to supply it. I have the units hidden...

    Domestic Aircon power supply

Any static item i.e. over 18 kg and not on wheels, using 2 kW or over, should be on a dedicated circuit. It is rare the manufacturers will state the inrush, but they will normally tell you the size of supply required, which is a good indexation of the inrush. Yes, in some cases we can see...

    Domestic Aircon power supply

Inverter drives have reduced the start load, but until you know the start load, there is no answer.

    EICR - RCD type

If I get any item which needs bidirectional RCBOs I will change, but otherwise the type AC will remain, they actually said they were type B on the boxes.

Plug in solar, what do you think?

No good for me, can't spell Suzuki. 1:30 pm and today exported 10.4 kWh. Looking at same time last year, also seeing all but two days in March export, up to 23.9 kWh and back then not being paid for export. Solar production up to 31.5 kWh. 2024 was not so good, but that's the problem. Solar...

    AC Installation - Career change

1980 I got a job on a pipeline in Algeria and started to work on heat pumps, or ACs as we called them back then. The problem was charging the units with gas, we had around 5 sites over a 310 kilometre pipeline, and one unit to recharge them with. So as an electrician, I would fix the fault, then...

Mira Platinum - HP/Combi versus Gravity Fed

It seems the problem is where a pump can cause a negative pressure in the supply so it can draw in nasties into the drinking water from any small leak. So power showers need feeding from a header tank, not direct from mains, but nothing you are doing changes the situation so as @denso13 says.
