Blocked cold feed? Test cold feed pipe from F&E tank to where it joins system (should be near pump or air separator) with a magnet. If sticks, likely to be blocked. Solution is cut out blocked part(s) and replace with new pipework.

May I suggest you may have a blocked cold feed causing it to over heat. Locate cold feed and put a magnet on it!

The gravity feed pressure on the cold side was very slow when filling a bath. It took around 1 hour to run and fill a bath so the cold water feed was tapped into the mains instead and the cold gravity blocked off.

If the cold feed is blocked it will be a slug of iron oxide. Hence the magnet. The cold feed is normally the 15mm pipe connected inbetween the 22mm vent and the pump. The vent and cold feed should be no more than 150mm apart. If you don't have a strong magnet (I don't!) turn the cold mains...

Sounds like your cold feed is blocked. Take a magnet and put it on the cold feed pipe where it tee's into the flow pipe and see if it sticks.
