Cut into live mains cable with metal stanley knife..

Honestly, I'd just call in the pros and suck it up. You don't want to leave that little booby trap for the next owner.

Cut into live mains cable with metal stanley knife..

Lucky boy! A few years back I was adding sockets to a ring main. I'd left the radio on as a reminder that the power was on. My brain somehow reversed this message and as I was singing along to Dio, I happily cut through the cable. There was a loud bang and I shook violently for about 2 seconds...

    Extension condition question

I'm guessing the extension floor is concrete?

    Extension condition question

That's a difficult one. I'd want to look at the original building just to check that there are no major issues with that part first. The images you have shared of the extension tend to suggest that corners were cut. The bricks may be slightly different sizes, which might explain the bad toothing...

    Flag dynamics

I'm trying to get to the essence of this. As I understand it, you'd throw your country's flag to the ground in temper and jump all over it because [in your opinion] a few people may have used it inappropriately? Remember when Geri Halliwell adorned herself in the Union Jack? I certainly do!

    Flag dynamics

When a country has given you a childhood full of freedom and adventure, the opportunity to go to school, get a job, provide for your family and perhaps even buy your own house, nursed you when you were unwell and finally given you an old-age pension, I think you should be flying the flag of that...

    Flag dynamics

I've got a miniature hand-held flag pole that I like to wave around. I stuck it in a cake once.

    What a mess

Humourous comments aside, we are here to give honest opinions and advice. When a job has been done very badly (like this one) you will find that the consensus is to strip it all out and start afresh. Sometimes we need a push to do this; especially when there's hard work or money involved! We've...

    What a mess

    1. Remove it. 2. Burn it. 3. Never talk about it again.

There should be a trigger warning on this post! How am I supposed to sleep tonight?

    Backbox fitting

I was cutting channels for cables on a very windy day. I opened the back and front doors and the grinder dust blew straight out and up into the air. Perfect. Not for the neighbours though. Lol

    Garage Footings? Cracks! :-/

I've read that builders really skimped on garage footings in the 60s, so I'm expecting to find that they're quite shallow - hence the sagging corner. I'll post pics of the dig this week.

    Backbox fitting

If you really want to keep the dust to a minimum (and you have plenty of time and patience!) you can use masking tape to stick an old laundry tablet box to the wall beneath the back box (dust catcher) drill multiple holes into the recess with a masonry bit and then use a scutch chisel to remove...

    Garage Footings? Cracks! :-/

It's been very wet in that corner over the last few years due to a blocked soakaway and a bad roof design. Obviously I'll be sorting out those issues, but I'm also thinking that this corner will need underpinning in some way?

    Garage Footings? Cracks! :-/

I'll have a dig around when the rain stops, but in the meantime, can anyone guess what sort of footings I'll find beneath the walls of my 1966 brick garage? There are a few cracks appearing at the rear corner! Thanks once again!
