Cost for bricking up a small window?

I've had quotes recently for a standard day's work (4 hours) saying 30 litres of unleaded and a Greggs voucher, and 20 litres of diesel and a Ryanair single ticket for the same day - I'm still awaiting references for the second one. You need to sharpen your pencil.

Cost for bricking up a small window?

It's a days work for one man. Whatever a days work costs. Are brickies on £400 /day, £96k /year? [Breaks glass to get emergency trowel]

    New roof?

More of an independent person who will report only and won't be touting for work. A building surveyor normally, or an independent roofing surveyor. Ideally, you would get a report telling you what's wrong and a specification telling you what needs to be done to fix it. You then give the...

Solar panels instead of a roof

25 year compared to 75 year life. How does that factor in to savings in electricity?

Time for a new roof, or keep patching things up?

It all comes down to the difference between quotes for repair and for replace. But 60-80 years is typical expected life of those tiles. I don't know what the roofer was talking about regarding counter battens.

    New roof?

It's invariably much less to repair than replace. The tiles will have another 40 years life. You should get several quotes, and may like to consider getting a proper assessment done by a suitable person and one that will not benefit from the work they may recommend.

    Floating floor versus traditional footings

Rebuilding like for like will be more than double the cost, for about the same space and amenity. Rebuilding may attract planning permission requirement. If the floor slab remains, it will need insulation and a floor deck on top which will decrease the room height if the ceiling is at a fixed...

Best way to protect bottom of bathroom door from steam after trimming?

They are wrong, and can't back up that opinion with any published guidance or standards. That argument about the airing cupboard is tenuous at best and nonsense at worse, and would mean every such airing cupboard no matter where it is located to require a fire door. In fact every cupboard or...

Best way to protect bottom of bathroom door from steam after trimming?

If its oil finish, use a quality oil and several coats to let it soak in. If painted, use a polyurethane varnish, 2 or 3 coats. A trick which may help prevent edge splinters is to run a thin bead of superglue along the edge of the ply veneer

Best way to protect bottom of bathroom door from steam after trimming?

Bathrooms don't need fire doors to perform as fire doors.

RSJ replacement. Am I being difficult or is it the builder?

Don't rely on building control. Their inspection process is minimal, and is based on "is there a beam, is it the size specified, is it on padstones". Yes to all three = a pass. The point of packing it to prevent movement over the longer term. Whilst collapse may be unlikely, movement and...

    Retro fit rodding eye.

Seems like a stupid request to fit on a home system. What is the actual risk of a blockage? Just tell him you will fit one when you actually need to - the process is exactly the same - you cut in to the pipe! Any access point must be fitted in a place where it can actually be used and rods...

RSJ replacement. Am I being difficult or is it the builder?

When joists are built in, it is normal to prop them to support the wall above, not use needles or strong boys. The wall above should not drop, if it has then the builder did not check it and wedge it properly. I don't understand the bit about needing a plate. Joints would normally be packed...
