Clear varnish for painted metal butterflies

Spray in warm dry conditions. Several light coats. Observe the time between coats, as per the can. That way it will last.

    Matt emulsion everywhere

After removing the paint, electric fittings can be polished up like new with Solvol Autosol metal polish. On woodwork, try sanding the paint down, see if you can get a sharp edge. If you can, then repaint, but if it keeps flaking then the adhesion is not good, burn it off and start again...

    What has happened here?

Bad luck! It's a pain finding that the PO was a decorating slob. Where it's loose you'll be able to get a scraper behind it and take most of it off in sheets. Where it's stuck, you either rub down to a fine edge, or take it off with stripper, I used Peelaway 7 which doesn't need neutralising...

    How to remove tiles unbroken

So, thankyou, I got as far as cutting out some of the grout, then the project evolved as one might say, and in the end no tiles were removed. One reason was that although the tiles are white, or appear white, it seems there are a gazillion shades of white, and I couldn't match them. Doesn't...

    How to remove tiles unbroken

Google, a source of dodgy ideas sometimes, but here is this chap using a multitool to get behind the tiles. Albeit they are quite newly affixed. I could try that... and the water. I'll let you know.

    How to remove tiles unbroken

I need to remove three 6x3" tiles from the top of a row. Preferably unbroken. I'm raising the tiling height above them and I can't just go on up as they are rolled edge so the grout won't stick or will look too thick. I'm also concerned about loosening the nearby tiles. I've cut out the grout...

The wall is more shapely than Dianna Dors

Over what height? Leaving aside potential issues with shower enclosures that may be harder to fit alongside a leaning wall, if the wall is flat, the lean doesn't matter, the adhesive will easily cope. If it's a bit wavy it's easier to lose the waves with smaller tiles. Otherwise you have the...

Do I need to switch the shower off?

Interesting, thankyou.... As a rule I've been using the shower on its middle setting, but a few weeks ago I turned it up to high which is 9kw. Perhaps that accelerated the failure. It seems rather odd that a switch should be so poor at switching. Just as well light switches work better. I...

Do I need to switch the shower off?

Our 9kw Mira shower has just eaten a second pullcord switch in ... not many years. An MK, in this case, about 3 years old. The neon glows faintly, but no power to the shower. I switch it off after each use. Do I need to, or can I just leave it on?

Your favourite method of sealing the tile/bath joint

Quadrant... was it this? And did you stick it to the tiles, or to the wall beneath the bottom row of tiles? And what did you stick it with? It does of course depend on the wall and the tiling being near perfectly flat. I guess silicone may be OK if one uses it regularly and knows how to get a...

Your favourite method of sealing the tile/bath joint

It gets black with mould, and is impossible to clean. I would rather use chewing gum.... :cautious:

Your favourite method of sealing the tile/bath joint

No silicone thankyou!! What's your favourite method of sealing onto the rim of a bath? Existing bath - 60s, enamelled - has quadrant tiles which have lasted pretty well, do not leak and are not loose. New bath - Villeroy and Boch - made of quartz/acrylic, should be pretty rigid. Unfortunately...

Chase cutter for concrete block wall

Thankyou gentlemen. I've since realised that if I choose a shower with top entry I could surface-run the pipe, chrome, and just need to sink the cable. A chaser would be useful elsewhere though.

Chase cutter for concrete block wall

1960s extension, hard concrete block internal wall. To put a power shower on that wall I need to chase for the 15mm copper feed pipe, and the electric of course. Any recommendation for a power chaser? Probably just for this job, but one never knows. Never fitted a power shower, how deep do I...

    Want a deeper bath

Looking for a deeper bath. I was thinking of a Japanese-style soaker, but they look a pain to climb in and out especially for the OH. Then I looked at deep baths with a door, looks like more pain if the seals leak. So, just a standard bath but deeper. Length 1650 - width of our bathroom. Best...

New combi boiler, rads, TRV's on 10mm microbore pipework....noisy rads and loud tapping in ceiling?

Hmm, I would never have installed a modern overcomplex boiler, but you are where you are. The really baffling part is that it works OK for a month. That suggests a gradual build-up of... blockage?... air? Is there a header tank in the loft? Or is it a pressure system? If there's a tank, there...

    Vertical rads positioning vs efficiency

Column rads can be excellent in terms of heat from a small wall space... if they're like this... one of a complete cast iron system I installed in 1982 in our previous house Crane... four column, ten section, 30" high, 4500 btu. Weight 150lb... I had more muscle back then....

    Dual immersion for bigger bath?

Yes, they can, but one is likely to burn one's bottom at 80C. OK, errm, like this?

    Dual immersion for bigger bath?

Thankyou. Never heard of that option. So only needs one feed. A quick look suggests low amps, requires a relay I guess. Further investigation. I could interpose a manual switch to turn off the lower stat for days when we won't need the extra water. Haha, yes that's one way of looking at it...

    Vertical rads positioning vs efficiency

Yes it was, but there will always be cold air 'falling down' the window. Even with dg, the glass is going to be the coldest surface in the room. So that's where the heat needs to be. Just be careful that when the curtains are drawn they don't cover the rad. That elementary error can be avoided...
