    how good are sunpipes?

Looking at increasing natural light to a bathroom, and wanting an alternative to velux windows. Any thoughts on how good sunpipes are, and if the ones that also vent are worthwhile :?: Thanks

Leave Velux when converting to GRP

Thanks, for the reply, will look into which model of Velux they are and explore whether there is a suitable alternative but for the same size of aperture or discuss enlarging the aperture and possibly doing without any.

    Roof lights for 'flat' roof

Hi We're having an extension done and are having some roof lights put in. The issue is that the pitch of the roof will be around 10-11 degrees. I see that Velux do a flat roof velux, but it's not the most attractive solution (in my opinion). Are there any other alternatives out there...

    Fire Door Building Regs

Also there is an alternative means of escape from the loft , another velux window had to be fitted lower down, would this make any difference to having fire doors/closers?

    Poor lead flashing.

y' tellin me! i think in this instance i would have bit the bullet and risked fitting the velux normally to the shallow pitch. the flashings and the velux do not recognise pitch , to them all surfaces are a flat plane, albeit sloping! i agree velux will not guarantee their product...

    Replacement Roof Window

Photos aren't uploading on the site atm, could be any of the alternatives, Keylite, Rooflight Co, or whoever else was making them in the 80s etc who knows, I bet Velux knew though but wouldn't tell!

Planning permission for a velux conversion?

I've just had an architect round to get a quote on doing some loft conversion plans, I was slightly puzzled when he told me I need to apply for planning permission because I want to put a velux window on a roof slope that faces the road (house is on a corner, both slopes are visible from the...

    Leaking Velux fix

Hi all, I regularly get a leak from a Velux window during periods of intense rainfall and I finally managed to diagnose what I think would affect many others. So posting up to hopefully help. In my case I cleared out all the gunk and moss, etc and then started testing. It seems that the rain...

    Alternative to Velux/Fakro windows

I'm planning on rebuilding my old uPVC conservatory that I knocked down last spring, but taking advantage of the new 'percentage of glass' rules to try to make it a more usable space in winter/summer. This means I'll make it a traditional build - cavity walls, wall plates, cut roof, plastic...

    Velux Window Installation

Have you considered gable windows and or skylight tubes as an alternative to Velux windows. Two gables, even on a mono pitch roof (you don't give a configuration) could give more than double the light of Velux that you've in any of your stated configurations and could be triple glazed if that's...

Replace Velux with a normal double glazed unit

That was my thinking. I have already had a quote for Velux replacement, and this guy could also do it, but he was offering it as an alternative. I didn't want to dismiss the idea just because I'd never seen it work. I'll wait for a few more replies incase anyone pops along with a link to...

How to stop condensation on velux window dripping down wall and ruining paint work

Hello , the title says it all really. I have a velux in a small extension in a vaulted roof off of the kitchen . Condensation has started to form and runs down the lower end and down the surrounding ceiling . This has left a brownish water stain on the white Matt paint . I know ventilating...

Lean to roof Timber sizes and dead load

Precisely, and if I was doing my own roof with 6" rafters, I wouldn't double them up at the velux. But most building Inspectors I've come across ask for this. The alternative is to provide them with structural calcs, but its easier/cheaper just to put another rafter in, if only to shut them up.

    Alternatives to Velux

Hi Ronny I have three skylights in an extension I built 5yrs ago. I used Velux triple glazed polyurathane which where expensive at the time compared to a lot of alternatives but when it snows it doesn't melt for a long time, and after a couple of years you will have no regrets about buying cheap.

    Non-opening velux type window

There are cheaper alternatives to a Velux and as you will never open it you're unlikely to have to worry too much about reliability of the opening mechanism of a cheaper (poorer quality) rooflight. In times of very hot weather an opening a rooflight can be an excellent source of ventilation...

    Sunlux (velux alternative) flashing advise?

hi Can somebody advise if this window flashing is installed correctly as some water has come in from inside of window

Velux roof windows - polyurethane or painted?

On a related note, are veluxes worth the premium? They seem to be the new Hoover but I have come across cheaper versions from brands such as Sunlux and Optilight. Thing is I'm only likely to do one loft conversion. It would be a pain to have to replace windows and flashing because I went cheap...

Is this normal? Tiles around velux look messy

So, the builder built the roof, bought the velux with flashing kit and was about to tile it when you asked for an alternative tile! Aaanyhoo, he should have known that plains should not be used on less than 35 degree pitch, even if you insisted. It is likely he was going to install...

    Insulating a Velux loft conversion

Hello, We had a Velux loft conversion completed (building regs ok) on our flat, which is the upstairs of a converted end terrace Edwardian house. This was completed about 9 years ago and the majority of the time it has been rented out. Our latest tenant mentioned the loft room is freezing in...
