Norcon, What was the construction of the retaining wall? was it similar to the one described above. I recently did a gravity wall that was 1500mm high and 900mm wide at the base. So you would be looking at somewhere near 600mm wide for a metre high gravity wall.

You can take a quite a lot of the mortar out from around the stone but I wouldn't go more than about 30mm back and if they start to become loose just point in sections with a hydraulic lime 3.5 NHL 1:4 with building sand

Rake it out to 20mm use a 1:4 mix cement sand and add some waterproofing/ frost additive to it and you should be ok. but it is common for the last mm to shale up in this area and is not a problem if you can live with it.

Geraint, I don't know I'm asking the question, To take the place of the trussed elements and support the ridge? I've just seen either a ridge beam or purlins used as the size of the rafters wont span

Shouldn't there be a steel ridge beam on a trussed loft con. The collar ties are only holding the rafters down and not doing the job of a raised tie truss. The rafters should be a min of 150 deep i think? But the ridge looks unsupported to me.

I started off with stone walls exposed in my house and as far as I know the above solution is inevitable. I ended up covering them. If the mortar is crumbling and thats causing the dust then repoint but they are a pain.

The best thing I found for acid washing is heavy guage rubber gloves a fairly strong acid mix and a wooden finger nail brush then you can get into the smearing quite well and definately wash it off.

According to trada timber tables cieling joists wont span that far. What type of roof do you have? is it a truss or does it have purlins?
