Microbore - basics for a newbie

Hi all, I moved in to a 90s house recently and want to start doing some decorating etc. The house has microbore piping to the radiators and it is not something that I know anything about really. Through my father in law (who knows much more about plumbing than me) and a bit of googling, I...

System boiler system - how does the system top up after loss of water?

Good point. There has definitely been a leak in the airing cupboard where the cylinder is at some point in the past so I will keep a close eye when turning the valve on. So is the HW that resides in the cylinder pumped around the radiators and I don't have to worry about pressure etc, I just...

System boiler system - how does the system top up after loss of water?

Thanks. I guess I should chuck in some inhibitor at the same time. So I guess going back to my original query, if I lose water via a radiator removal etc, the header tank should refill automatically to compensate for this. Is this correct?

System boiler system - how does the system top up after loss of water?

So should I open the valve and the ball cock should take care of automatically topping it up? I wonder why the valve is off...a bit worrying.

System boiler system - how does the system top up after loss of water?

Can you explain the reason for doing this? It's currently empty (not sure if it should be) but I don't really understand the function of it. I had no problems with heating since I moved in a year ago and haven't touched that valve. Thanks

System boiler system - how does the system top up after loss of water?

Sorry for the delay in getting back. Discovered my stopcock was seized today while testing turning the water off and it took a bit of wrestling to unsieze it. Glad I found out now rather than when I really needed to turn it off! To answer you questions... 1.) Correct, HW stops coming out of...

System boiler system - how does the system top up after loss of water?

Thank you for explaining it so clearly. So is the water that is held in the cylinder pumped around the radiators? If yes, what happens when I remove a radiator (and therefore lose some water?)

System boiler system - how does the system top up after loss of water?

I'm not sure, but when I first moved into the house I posted on diynot for some advice and several people confirmed it was a system boiler.

System boiler system - how does the system top up after loss of water?

I've attached a couple of images that show my boiler and cylinder. The boiler is an Ideal Classic. There is no tank in the loft (the loft has been converted)

System boiler system - how does the system top up after loss of water?

Hi all, Apologies in advance if I get any terminology incorrect. I moved into a house about a year ago with a system boiler. I've always lived in houses with a regular/conventional boiler system so I'm still getting my head around how a system boiler works. I'm looking at doing some...

Help understanding why I'm not getting enough Hot Water for a full bath

An update with some good news.... After increasing the cylinder temp to around 72c I had plenty of HW for my daughter's bath this afternoon. This was after taking a quick shower myself a couple of hours before. Brilliant, thanks guys I am pretty sure we have the solution here ☺️. Just a...

Help understanding why I'm not getting enough Hot Water for a full bath

Hi everyone, First of all let me say thank you for all the replies. They have been extremely helpful in helping me understand my system and what might be going on. @JonathanM - I had not fully understood how the HW is heated via the cylinder on a thermal store. Your explanation was very...

Help understanding why I'm not getting enough Hot Water for a full bath

Hi all, I moved into a new house earlier this year, so this is the first winter. The house is approx 25 years old and has the original (system) boiler with HW cylinder (serviced each year). When we first moved in we had plenty of HW. However, since winter has come along and we have had the...

System boiler - should HW automatically come on when CH is turned on?

At the programmer. The HW LED on the programmer lights up when the CH automatically comes on via the set time or if I manually press the HEATING ADVANCE button.

System boiler - should HW automatically come on when CH is turned on?

Sorry for the delay guys, got a sick toddler which is taking up all my time. Below are the images of my system. I believe it is the original system installed with the house (about 20 years old). It has been serviced each year. Please let me know if you require any further information.

System boiler - should HW automatically come on when CH is turned on?

Hi all, I moved in to a new house earlier this summer which I believe has a system boiler (I'm used to a regular boiler in my old house). The HW is programmed to come on twice a day. This week (as I am sure a lot of people have :)) , the CH went on for the first time. I noticed that when the...

Can anything be done to improve noise or temp insulation in slot vent?

Hi all, Earlier this year I moved in to a new house. The windows in this house have the slot vents at the top of the frame that you can open and shut to allow air to flow through. We have found that even when shut, they seem to let a lot of noise through. If a neighbour is out in their...
