    Vermiculite - false negative result?

Thanks for that - I went out and bought an asbestos mask, just in case! The problem is, with the knowledge that it was safe, I bagged up a load to put down down a load of fibreglass insulation in its place - I was worried that the dust could have covered everything in my loft, which is quite...

    Vermiculite - false negative result?

Hi there. I found some vermiculite last year, in my loft. After an internet search and shi**ing my pants for a bit, I sent some off and it came back negative (I took samples from a couple of places). However, I happened to come across a Canadian website that suggests that vermiculite can give...

Who to use for an asbestos survey?

Due to Lockdown, I am thinking of doing up our house a bit but I am rather concerned about asbestos. Just as a precaution, I would prefer to pay for an asbetsos survey before I touch anything. How do I go about finding a reputable company for this (I am based in Essex)? It is such a serious...

General advice on circular saw blades.

Panic over the blade is indeed 20mm. I bought a 60-tooth blade and the cut was pretty impressive.

General advice on circular saw blades.

Thanks mate - never occurred, to me, to even have considered the bore size. What is really confusing is that the (seeimingly) same saw seems to confirm a different bore size, from two different sellers...

General advice on circular saw blades.

Hello, I recently bought a Mac Allister plunge saw and note that it comes with a 165mm 24-tooth TCT blade. I have yet to use the thing but thought I would do a bit of research first, before using it. I am glad I did, now, as I am not convinced that the blade that came with the saw is the...

Automatic blinds - too expensive. Ever considered making your own?

That's just ridiculous. I realise that new products come with an initial premium, until the technology matures, but this seems to be a case of mass exploitation.

Automatic blinds - too expensive. Ever considered making your own?

I was just looking at automatic blinds and they seem ludicrously expensive, for what they are. Has anyone looked at any DIY alternatives? A small stepper motor, controlled by a Arduino could be an option.

Better alternative to jigsaw for straight cuts (Edit - Which track saw)?

I just called them and, unfortunately, the item is strictly for in-store collection only. Thanks for the suggestion, though - was definitely worth a shot.

Better alternative to jigsaw for straight cuts (Edit - Which track saw)?

No apology necessary, old chap. From what I have recently read, the MacAlister plunge saws are (apparently) indeed identical to the Titans - they are just rebadged. Can anyone confirm that this is definitely true? If so, given Peter Millard's video review of the Titan, I would go with one of...

    Asbestos in old roofing felt?

You were absolutely right, old chap - test came back as bitumen with zero trace of any asbestos.

    Extractor fan advice

Exactly - plus, would it not be pulling dry warm air out of the bathroom unnecessarily too?

    Extractor fan advice

Hi there. I am about to have an extractor fan put in and have been doing a bit of research as to which one to get. Apparently, new builds tend to use extractors that are constantly on (be it at a very slow speed) but then ramp up whenever needed. Is the a continuously-on version worth...

Which of these (many) things might have asbestos?

Thanks for that update - glad that there is minimal asbestos in your gaff. I also recently had some vermiculite tested and that also came back negative - it does seem that it was mostly Canadian and American homes that ended up with the tainted stuff.

    Asbestos in old roofing felt?

Thanks for that - I have sent a sample off just in case (results back in a few days, so fingers crossed). Actually, I remember seeing an episode of QI that confirmed that nuclear material was used around 1930s for "glow in the dark" condoms. Now that is something to be really scared of!

    Asbestos in old roofing felt?

Is that a good or a bad thing? If you put in anything with asbestos, into Google, it usually brings something up.

    Asbestos in old roofing felt?

Unfortunately, this stuff seems to be falling down of its own accord. It is really odd - it is like crispy thick paper and there are bits of it that have dropped on the vermiculite from over the years. Plus there are are huge sections of bare tiles, so I have assumed that these have been...

    Asbestos in old roofing felt?

Agreed - I have opened up a real can of worms with this asbestos malarkey (seems to be everywhere) and it is definitely making me paranoid. Shall get a separate test done to make sure.

    Asbestos in old roofing felt?

I hope this is not a stupid question, but here goes: The vermiculite, that I had tested, was used to fill in between the rafters in my loft. If the lining were disintegrating, is it likely that any asbestos fibres would have fallen on to the vermiculite below and given a positive reading?

    Asbestos in old roofing felt?

Hi there. Having had a bit of a scare with vermiculite in my loft (which turned out not to contain asbestos), I have just read that old roof felt could contain asbestos. My house was built in the 30s, but we have no idea when the felt was put in. All I can say is that the felt is really...
