Does my plumber know how to service my boiler...?

Find myself in a difficult position. My parents used the same plumber for 20-30 years, and since I moved back here 5 years ago I inherited him. He’s in his 60s, so been doing it a while. I like him because he always turns up when he says he will! 4 years ago, he replaced my crumbling boiler...

    High electricity consumption at night

Here's a picture of the meter... is it possible to tell when the switchover takes place? I suppose she could switch one of the storage heaters on, and watch for when the switch lights up...?

    High electricity consumption at night

OK an update. Firstly, thanks to everybody who has contributed useful thoughts and suggestions. The rads do indeed have two cables, and two wall switches. Since she’s lived in the flat, the actual storage heaters have never been switched on; on the rare occasions she doesn't get enough heat...

    High electricity consumption at night

Thanks John - but for me I suppose the suspicious thing is that the SWALEC girl told her the heavy consumption was during the night, when nothing much is turned on really...

    High electricity consumption at night

Well... last quarterly one was £270 for a one-bed flat in the middle of a block. It's warm (maybe from the flat underneath, I don't know) and she rarely puts the radiator on. £90 a month seems excessive? I think she said it went up a lot maybe 6 months ago, but I'm not sure...

    High electricity consumption at night

No smart meter, but I'll ask about the bill. Just one problem... the block doesn't have central heating :ROFLMAO:

    High electricity consumption at night

Oh, believe me, I've been trying to get her to check the meters night and morning... but it's cold/dark/wet/scary etc. I'm persevering...

    High electricity consumption at night

    And what's this exactly?

    High electricity consumption at night

Does this look like what you're suggesting?

    High electricity consumption at night

Hhmmm, that's interesting - didn't know that was a possibility. I'll find out... Yes, and here's a pic of the consumer unit (one of them):

    High electricity consumption at night

My daughter is getting very high electricity bills in her tower block flat. These predate the recent increases, so God knows what they’ll be now… She spoke to an extremely rude and unhelpful woman at SWALEC, who told her that the excessive consumption was at night. She’s on some kind of dual...

    How to build a bed...

Thanks, that’s what I wanted to know. NOOOOO I want straight bits  Actually, inspired by the suggestions above, I remembered I had 4 shower pan supports in the garage, so have stuck them under the bed posts for now - at least that way I can see what it's like for a while before I decide...

    How to build a bed...

Well... two reasons, I suppose: (1) how would I remove the legs, as they appear to be glued in place? (2) the new wood would be a very different colour, wouldn't it  Yes, I suppose the brackets are a thought...

    Making a record/vinyl storage unit

Funny, I used to have a fanatically-acquired collection of approx. 550 albums – mostly late 60s-early 70s prog rock etc. I kept mine in a slightly modified pine rack I bought out of a newspaper ad back then for £30, I think. I’ll attach a pic if I can find one – since then, the collection has...

    How to build a bed...

I’ve decided to build my own bed. I’ve slept in the same one for maybe 40 years, but now I need it to be a bit higher – I’m retired, bored, so have decided to try and replicate this one exactly, but maybe 6” higher. I’m pretty handy, but with experience of carpentry limited to putting shelves up...

    Can't shift cistern lid

That's it for sure. Thanks so much everybody who responded - sometimes wonder if you guys realise how lost people like me would be without your help :notworthy:

    Can't shift cistern lid

Okily dokily... thanks to you, I got it off - it just unscrews, as suggested. Some pics attached. As I mentioned earlier, I don't want to tackle flush valve replacement - do you think a replacement button would be available? Thanks again :D

    Can't shift cistern lid

Thanks guys - I will take a pic tomorrow. They were to send me one this evening, but youg people :mad::mad: Even if I have to buy them a complete flush valve just to get a new button, that'll be a relief :ROFLMAO:

    Can't shift cistern lid

I'm trying to help a skint young family sort their flat out. Unfortunately, I am REALLY crap at plumbing... the buttons are missing from the push-button flush of their toilet, so I want to replace it, but the lid won't lift off the cistern. Sorry no pic – didn’t think till I’d left. I’ve done a...

    Flush handle doesn't fit

Hhmmm I must be missing something (generally the case when I get involved in plumbing ) I quickly measured the spindle when picking Mum up for Christmas dinner, and it seems more like ¾" than ⅜" The ancient little cistern is indeed Ideal Standard though  {edit} Have...
