Doing a shed base myself, using patio slabs. Intent is for a 10x8 shed, which will house bike, some weight equipment, approx. 150kg worth of stuff plus me when I train in there. Was going for 150mm deep, filled 100mm sub base Then mix builders sand and cement (with a paddle mixer and builders...

    New shed base options

...the sides covered with shingle. Probably last the longest? Would probably need concrete delivery as its a lot to mix up even with my cement mixer. Concerned weeds will eventually appear around the edges. - Dig out the shed footprint, put down hardcore and sub-base, lay slabs as a base...

    Noisy flaps

...That's an awful pic, its a lovely shiny stainless steel. Wifey didn't want plastic. Anyway - useless. Whatever setting the fan is on makes it clink loudly as the flaps open and close. Sounds like loose change in a cement mixer. Can anyone suggest/ recommend a stainless steel one that is...

    How to POUR concrete footings

You can do it in stages if you wish? My foundations are in 3 sections due to drains... Pop half a bag of cement in a bucket, guage this to a shovel load of ballast. I think mine was 10 shovel loads to a full bag of cement? Splitting the bags in half makes it so much easier to handle and tip...

It all makes work, for the working man.

...vehicles, playing on the phones and brewing up. Obviously more than just a simple blocked drain, because wheel barrows, shovels and cement mixer involved, however..... This morning, just the crew cab truck and one van. They are mixing cement in a mixer, which they had to beat lumps out of...

Mixing Dry Screed Right, driving me nuts.

You'll have to see about the water. Some damp sand wont need any. Once half the sand is in the mixer you can see if it's too dry or OK, then if water is needed add it so the sand looks too wet, as the cement and rest of the sand will then dry it up. Once you have done a mix, you will know how...

Mixing Dry Screed Right, driving me nuts.

Half the sand first then most of the water, then all the cement, then the rest of the sand, then add any more water if need be. You may need to use the shovel in the middle of the mixer to turn it over too, as the drum turns.

    Foundation for a Shed

I put up one of the keter sheds a few years ago. I already had a base but it was very un-level. The sheds use a plastic base and the sections sit in the base plate if the slab is too out it just won't assemble. I cast a new base on top of existing went from like 30mm to nothing poured concrete...

    How to POUR concrete footings

I did 1.3m3 in an afternoon (first time doing concrete mixing). You will be fine! Wear a mask and rubber gloves. Use a shovel to chuck the ballast in - Ideally off a flat surface (measure how many shovels fill a bucket). Don't pick up buckets of ballast into the mixer as it will kill your back...

    How to POUR concrete footings

Easy, 4 jumbo bags of ballast, 20 bags of cement. Get everything ready: 7 buckets (£1 each at b and q) - 6 x ballast, 1 x cement. Hose pipe, decent extension lead for mixer. If you can get hold of some plywood sheets build a bay for your ballast, it's hard work shovelling out of the bags when...

    Building a Shed

...As it was on demand, the fact I'd underestimated slightly wasn't an issue as we just paid for the extra bit instead of falling short of the shuttering. My neighbour went with the cement mixer and bags approach and must have been laying his slab for days, spread over several weekends and evenings.

Advice on Block work corners for extension

be careful as the paddle mixer can over plasticise it, it’s a different mix action to a slow moving drum. I noticed recently that small areas I’d done with the paddle were noticeable softer a few days later than a normal mix. Whether that’s an actual long term problem I don’t know but why take...

Advice on Block work corners for extension

I use 2 buckets of sand and half bucket of cement at a time. I add this to water in flexitub. Quick mix with shovel. Then mix with paddle on drill. Comes out perfect everytime. ;)

Advice on Block work corners for extension

Mixer on stand is far better than on the ground, have the barrow next to it and tip your mix into gorilla tubs in the barrow (average half cement bag mix gives about 3 tub fulls) Then you can clean it much easier than if it’s on the ground and tip the dirty water into another tub. Upturned...

    Building a Shed

Hello I have ordered a new Keter 8 X 11 plastic shed, and plan to keep one or two of my push bikes in it. I plan to secure them via a Gold Secure ground anchor. However the shed will need a base, I am considering making a concrete slab my self by ordering the cement and other bits and mixing...
