    Mystery Timber (to me anyway)

That will look fantastic as a moon clock and yeah, getting a movement might be tricky given its size. I thought the table looked like either oil, or a mat lacquer. Looks great with what's on it though. Cheers

    Crack in breeze block outbuilding

I feel for you esp if you personally commissioned it and you've also got a roof job to do - I know that one! given the price of materials and depending on how much time you have on your hands, is it worth disassembling it (not necessarily with TNT etc) de-mortaring the blocks, make an...

How to remove this protective plastic from window frame?

If you can't get them back, as yorks says, spend some time doing it with a knife. I've found that a proper scalpel/kraft knife has a narrower blade and it's super sharp, so perfect. Just don't let the cut ride up away from the joint and into the frame (seems obvious, but that's what I'd be...

    Mystery Timber (to me anyway)

I think you've cleared up the HW question up then Munroast (et al). Holy moly mate, that table really is the bee's knees. The moon phase one behind it in the making is going to be a stunner. This has got to be the most pleasing form of recycling surely. After the final sanding etc, what do...

    Mystery Timber (to me anyway)

That's interesting. Do your ones have the same channel throughout their length? Hardwood but with defects sounds like they are good enough to be for pallets, but don't cut the mustard for structural or other uses due to warping of splitting etc Damn, am I turning into a wood geek? I just...

    Mystery Timber (to me anyway)

Everyone’s Pallet theory - cheers all. Re noseall's suggestion, suppose they must use misc species/splitty ungraded HW pallets for heavy stuff like stone then. Munroast, foreign hardwood pallets - didn't know that. Re the end grain, yes exactly that, they are saw marks and the "rays" you...

    Mystery Timber (to me anyway)

Cheers all, no defo not pallet wood. It looks pretty seasoned and is hard and heavy. I know what you mean about the end grain securespark. That shot makes it look like it's a fast grower, but the other end looks quite fine. I might cut off the cracked bit and see how much it springs before...

    Mystery Timber (to me anyway)

Hi All Been looking for a bit of hardwood to make a chair leg out of and found this in a skip. It's pretty weighty and I can't make a mark in it with my thumb nail, so guessing hardwood. It's 2" x 3' and 40" long, has a 29mm x 8mm recess and is an offcut I'm guessing. Matter of interest...

Sourcing Zebra (Day & Night) blind for a 240cm width window recess

Cheers J. Thanks Foxhole, I hadn't thought of a roller kit. I'll have a punt around. Have a good one!

    Marks on Door

I've got a solvent collection that I try out on most objects that I need to clean. I always test each solvent on the thing to be cleaned, applying to to a less prominent part of the object in case it melts it or eats into the material its made of before I use it. It's generally suck it and see...

Sourcing Zebra (Day & Night) blind for a 240cm width window recess

Hi all I've got a fairly tight brief from my better half (no, not my Speedos) to install a Zebra blind in our kitchen. The recess is 2400mm wide and I'd like to install a single roller blind inside it. I know the width is quite a span, so that's a challenge to sourcing it from the kick off...

Lifting a old concrete manhole cover

Sounds like a summer job to me. I'd gather my tools and materials, get the cover off and do the necessary repairs in some decent weather. I suppose the biggest problem would be if the cover fell apart, so factor a solution for that in, in adance maybe.

    Mira shower mixer replacement/reinstatement

Hi people. I’ve got an old Mira excel shower mixer that just ain’t working. It looks pretty old and I can’t find a photo of it online to work out the exact version of the model. Ideally, if I was going to replace it, I’d be able to source a Mira mixer with the same centres for the hot and cold...

Lifting a old concrete manhole cover

This cover sounds damned weighty. If you can get a start by getting one end of the cover above surface level, you're already winning. To be honest, I wouldn't attempt it without a lever bar of some sort. I've had an 1.5M chisel and point crow bar all my life and it is a godsend. I've used...
