Unbalanced thermostatic shower - fit PRV or PEV?

Hi Doggit, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have isolating lever valves on both hot and cold. I tried partially closing the cold before I posted but, as you can imagine, they're a bit of a blunt weapon - from 180 to 90 degrees, no difference, but from 90 degrees to 89.9 degrees is dramatic...

Unbalanced thermostatic shower - fit PRV or PEV?

Hi, I've just fitted a Hansgrohe Raindance Select thermostatic mixer shower. With both hot and cold supplies running to it it gives water that is only "quite warm" (which is not warm enough for SWMBO to shower in it!) If I turn off the cold supply, it gives fully hot water. Hot is supplied by...

    Problems Installing Radiator Tails

Yes I am not sure I understand this question - what's the "lower half of [a] radiator tail?" Well, if you don't know, then I suspect no-one knows, as whatever happened, you did it! :-) Over and out on this thread for me now - stuff to get on with. Good luck with it ...

    Problems Installing Radiator Tails

Kind of impossible for me to say - not least because I am only a DIYer, so have done 10s of not thousands of joints. I generally tend to go for around five or six turns. In my experience, that's enough to feel the string fluff up in the joint but without having to apply undue torque to tighten...

    Problems Installing Radiator Tails

He's using Loctite 55, which is not PTFE tape. It's a highly fibrous string that frays asyou do up the joint, filling any gaps. Based on my experience of using it, the OP has applied it correctly. If anything, 5-6 turns is a little too much. I agree with your rule wrt tightening.

    UFH suddenly cold

Hi, I have an underfloor heating manifold with three zones. For about the last four years this has been working perfectly but on Saturday morning we woke up to find that all three floors were stone cold - and they have stayed that way since. Things I know: (1) The boiler is working fine - we...

    Latest horror...

The definition of voltage is perfectly straightforward as it is and doesn't need confusing with "balls in a pipe" analogies. (And before anyone asks: "The work done to move a unit electrical charge between two points in a static electric field".) With that settled, perhaps it might now be...

    Fitting outdoor plug help needed

I think I am broadly with BAS here. I have no problem with someone being unable to spell (and I do not claim to be able to, or never to make mistakes), but I do have a problem with someone who freely admits they can't spell and can't be bothered to press the 'spell check' button. Not only does...

    Screwfix trade-UK account

Equally, in the trade queue do you still get the staff who don't get the concept of "no, I don't wish to give you my name, address, postcode in order to buy this box of screws. I'll just take the receipt, thank you", or if they do get the concept go all sullen faced and start huffing like Kevin...

45cm floor tiles with precut 22.5cm grooves

Hi, We've just bought some floor tiles (Dual Gres chic Collection "Poole", sold as "The Townhouse Collection - Whittaker Street" by Tons of Tiles in the UK). The tiles are 45cm x 45cm but have come pre-cut with grooves on the face side so that each tile is effectively split into quarters...

How are your Google skills? James Hardie and co. have very clear instructions online on how to do this, including a video on Youtube. I won't patronise you by just giving you the link.

Replacing radiator taps (moved from electrics)

Note that the OP's "? is regarding connecting the tap end and the copper pipes on the in out pipes", hence my specific reply. For completeness: Tail to radiator joints: Assuming BSP, PTFE, as per the post above. Valve to tail: Assuming compression joint, as above.

Replacing radiator taps (moved from electrics)

Well, given you've asked a plumbing question in the electrical forum then I am the ideal person to reply, given that I am an IT guy and most certainly not an electrician. I think you are planning to replace your radiator valves ('taps'). First things first, I assume you (a) know you have to...

Painting over previously oiled or waxed interior doors.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I've used the little flowchart provided about half way through the thread. Whatever it is, it is definitely coming off with white spirit soaked wire wool (either that or the doors are also soaked in nicotine stains - could be, previous owner was a heavy smoker). I...

Painting over previously oiled or waxed interior doors.

Hi, We have interior Edwardian pine doors that have been dipped by a previous owner and then tinted with either an oil or a wax - given the finish, most likely a tinted danish oil type of product. Either way, they look carp. I want to return the doors to white, using water based paint (averse...

    Green under doorframe paint

Yes, it is. I don't know how old your house is but the colour palette of the greens/blues is reminiscent of the first half of the 20th century? If the house is 'old', be careful! Old (wood) paint contains high levels of lead compounds and these can be released if you use a heat gun at too high...

House rewire - use wireless lights?

You can rest easy. No-one on this thread has criticised Winston and neither has anyone on this thread stated that electricians should know about and understand ALL products. With all due respect and with no intent to cause offence, I suggest re-reading the thread will help to confirm that...
