I've just demolished a small stud wall in my living room, and it turns out the genius who built it decided, for reasons which are totally beyond me, to cut a hole through the floorboards under the wall, even though the hole didn't seem to play any part in the structure... I'm trying to work...

Ah, right, gotcha.... so no way to remove just the shade, need to take the whole thing off from the ceiling rose? I think plan B of cleaning it in situ sounds like the way forwards then!

Anybody got any idea how to get this lampshade off? As you might notice, it's in need of a thorough clean! The metal cap on top turns but doesn't unscrew... nothing else really moves at all!

Blackjack sounds like a decent option... would I just paint that along the seem? They seem to have a few products... All Wetaher Roof Coating, Bitumen Paint etc... which would be best for this? I see they also do a flashing tape... don't know if that would be an easy / effective option?

There's definitely at least a slight overlap, and (without popping back up there) I think in the first photo it looks like there's a slight raise going beyond the nails, which I'm guessing is how it should be done (ie so the nail is through both sheets)?

Nope, that's a twig, if I'm looking at the same thing! Still no clearer on what's causing the ingress then. Next time it's been raining a lot I'll go and give the inside a closer inspection... pretty sure the leaks line up with the joins in the felt, but may be able to spot more specifics...

Good shout, I think you might be right actually... I'll need to get up a ladder and check when it's light, but the far side / top of photo is lower, and it sure looks like the lowest / furthest felt lies on top of the middle one, doesn't it? Pretty dumb if so... I know nothing about felt...

Indeed, already have wireless and it's definitely not smart! Mostly just the app control I'm interested in at this point... so can manage while away from the house / don't have to fiddle around with the current clunky controller to change programmes etc. Will probably look to get some smart...

Yeah, I've seen some discussion on the fact the British Gas branded ones seem to share the same body as Hive ones. Not sure if that means the receiver is the same and can be used?
