    Worcester 532/i always 'on'

This is a 20 year old boiler and the first generation condensing Worcester (AFAIR manufactured by Junkers/Bosch). They were a great boiler but are now getting on. The noise could be the pump continuously running, it's a known issue with these early DDPWM pumps. A full and proper service...

Arcing in main cutout fuse..DNO says ok

I was investigating a customers heating system...the 3A FCU, 16 MCB & the RCD were blowing/tripping all at the same time. (that I may have resolved only time will tell). Anyway, whilst at the consumer unit I could hear the 60A fuse connections in the ceramic block arcing when I leaned on the...

    Expansion vessel question

Boiler manufacturers often have the valve at the bottom. It's normal for a little water to collect in the vessel on the air side but more than 1/2 a cup and you'd assume the diaphragm is perforated.

    Gas pipe through wall

Pipes are sealed on the inside to a leak can vent to the outside but gas meter boxes are a much higher risk (far more chance of leaks from the meter & connections) so the spigot in the box is sealed...

Blue gas flame with orange flashes

It's just rust particles on the black burner caps burning off...give them a tap and the whole flame will go orange.

    Inaccessible Gas meter

The chip shop owner must have access to the meter control valve at all times so either the meter needs re-locating or he must be able to gain access to your shop at all times. This is not an unusual occurrence, the regulations appeared to changed some time ago, at one time it was deemed...

Unvented cylinder overflow pipe into soil stack?

Note the pipework MUST be Polypropylene and use PP push fit fittings for their high temperature resistance. All work to be done by a G3 qualified installer.

Is this earth wire a problem?

The gas pipework's fine...the collar and sleeve has been fitted to the box to take the pipe through the cavity and the pipe is correctly sealed with a flexible putty...normally FJC.

Is this earth wire a problem?

Gas wise what's important is the correct sealing/sleeving at the pipe exit from the box through the cavity. We need another picture @Wilseus

Computer chips, is the UK missing a trick?

Of course there is...transistors are in everything and there's always been a demand for those that want the valve sound. Classic valves are reproduced by many manufacturers today and there's a vast no. of manufacturers producing valve equipment. Specialist valves are commonly used in high power...

High water usage - unvented cylinder?

Don't touch any valves relating to the heating system...there's always a chance they'll leak. If the heating system pressure is say 1 bar cold or thereabouts it is fine Try isolating the cold main coming into the property (under the sink maybe?) and at the cylinder cold inlet to the pressure...

    Range Tribune HE

You don't touch those immersion heaters. Normally with a cylinder heated by electricity you would have a duel tariff contract. The heater towards the top is only ever switched on to top up the cylinder if you run out of hot water during the day as that would use higher rate electric. The lower...

    Phev batteries

Are Toyota really any better or does a typical Toyota driver not notice so many issues? Certainly a few years back the company were a shambles, the firmware was a disgrace with pretty much every basic rule being ignored. Somewhere on the web are the Court transcripts that make interesting...
