    A quiet heater?

Does the size of the oil-filled radiator affect how much noise it makes during the clinking of expansion and contraction?

    A quiet heater?

Fan heaters, I remember these noisy things in my student days. They were cheap and kept me warm alright. Today when buying a heater, I am paying for its silence too as well as its heat. I ordered a Russel Hobbs oil radiator that has just the fins - no cladding. I'll report back how it 'sounds'.

    A quiet heater?

The Delonghi Dragon is the precise model I have and you have described it well. I am returning it and replacing with an oil radiator that has no external metal cladding. You'd think Delonghi would know better. I found that the higher the thermostat was set at, the louder the clinking sound...

    A quiet heater?

I require a heater that makes almost no noise. I have recently tried an oil radiator. Yes, they are mostly quiet during operation but when they are cooling down (in-between thermostat switching on/off), during expansion and contraction of metal, they can produce 60-75db of noise in a sudden...

    Filling 'smallish' hole in ceiling.

Yeah, it's a timber joist that's seen in the photo. Conny, your idea sounds good but I'm having a lot of difficulty visualising it.

    Filling 'smallish' hole in ceiling.

I'd like to patch up this hole in my ceiling, where a mains powered smoke alarm used to be. Advice please?

Splurge of water ingression during heavy rain.

Obviously I'm missing something really obvious here. How can you 'move' a pipe? Do you mean re-route it from the source?

To where? And, when you say 'move', I presume you mean 'extend'?

Splurge of water ingression during heavy rain.

We've had some heavy rain over the past week and not a peep of water ingression to the concerned ceiling has occurred. I can therefore say with a degree a confidence that the roof was never the problem and that the water ingression has come from the two water exhaust pipes, that have been...

Splurge of water ingression during heavy rain.

I had another roofer out last week to take a look. He spent quite a bit of time looking at the roof. He came to the conclusion that the roof was unlikely to be causing the ingress and that the problem was likely coming from elsewhere. A couple of days later, I looked at my neighbour's house...

    Loft Hatch installation

I knew it looked way too good to be a simple and cheap install.

    Loft Hatch installation

Djangobanjo, that is a superb looking loft hatch! The rectangular cutting in the ceiling looks PERFECT! How did you get it to look so good? Most loft hatches I've seen overlap your plasterboard cutting a bit, hiding any ragged bits. Do you need to cut perfectly to use this particular loft hatch?

    Loft Hatch installation

Having watched a few YouTube videos and examining a loft hatch in one part of my house; I feel confident I could install a loft hatch in another part of my house. In looking at the spec for this part of my house, the roof trusses are at 60cm centres. Does this mean the distance between the roof...

Splurge of water ingression during heavy rain.

It just occurred to me that due to loft insulation, it wouldn’t really be possible to insert an inspection camera through the ceiling. I'm thinking of getting a loft hatch.

Thanks, RayCaister, that's now a third reason for drilling a small hole. 1) Provide drainage. 2) Provide ventilation. 3) Insert inspection camera.

Splurge of water ingression during heavy rain.

I haven't excluded the possibility of doing something like this down the line but just now I'd view cutting a hole of magnitude in order to stick my head through would seem to be a bit extreme at this stage. The drilling of a hole, or two, into the loft space would be an attempt to reduce the...

Splurge of water ingression during heavy rain.

Just thinking; This problem I have is obviously one of these long-term issues that could take months to isolate and resolve. In the meantime, while water is still splurging that same point in the ceiling; would it be a good idea to drill a small hole in the ceiling, to the loft space? This...

Splurge of water ingression during heavy rain.

The bottom ledge of windows (two of them) need re-siliconed. I'll do that in due course. I never cast an eye over the bricks; once again, all in due course. I wasn't comfortable being up there and just wanted it overwith. Oh dear, I so wanted to believe I'd sorted the problem. For now I'll...
