I normally buy KYB but dont think monroe are that bad, seem to remember they are oe fit to some fancy golf GTIs etc with active type suspension. I would agree about doing the top mounts whilst in there, I usually buy complete units from Febi Bilstein via parts in motion on ebay.

Could be wheel speed sensor related, I had an old Rover 25 once that had a similar problem, seem to remember it was related to a corroded pick up ring. May be worth hooking the car up to diagnostics and monitoring the wheel speed sensors when the fault occurs.
