What I normally do in this situation is take all the conductors of the disused cable, sleeve them and ground them all at the supply end.

Sometimes you get a fault where the conductors short together, there's a pop or a bang, and the short blows itself apart, without rupturing the fuse wire. Here's a slug in a junction box I found ages ago that was randomly causing repeated short circuits, but not blowing the BS3036 rewireable fuse.
