    Estate lighting external refurbishment

As above, all that powder corrosion would need to be cleaned off and then an etch primer used before a suitable top coat. If the top parts are removable, it may be easier to take them all off & get a paint shop to media blast & refinish them in something suitable?

    What hard drive / tower

Morgan Computers are way overpriced imo. They want £100 for a core2duo system that will be around 10-12 years old & would struggle even with the basics & YouTube will be restricted to about 360p! Anything half decent from there is £250+, may as well put a few quid more toward and get what I...

    What coloured emulsion to buy?

Many thanks. I'm looking at Crown Trade now is that any good? Seems to get good reviews generally & seems ok price wise

(novice alert) Fluorescent bathroom light dim

Unfortunately all modern 2D lamps are junk and the HF gear usually not much better. Thorn and GB (made in UK) lamps used to last for many years & switch start ballasts would last pretty much forever as long as failed lamps were replaced promptly.

(novice alert) Fluorescent bathroom light dim

What Flameport said, replace the whole thing. The electronic ballast, which is part of the lamp holder assembly on your fitting & cannot be easily separated for an LED replacement panel, will be knackered.

    What hard drive / tower

Personally I would not buy that £449 system, the CPU is overkill and it doesn't even have an SSD meaning everyday use performance within Windows will be painfully slow. Seems overpriced to me. The £319 system above would be alright if an SSD was added but the processor isn't the best and you'll...

    Best LED Lamps

Not had a problem with any Diall lamp I've seen or owned, they have always been the colour it says on the packet, I have some in 2700 and some in 3000k. I know of people who have the 4000k versions too, no problems there either. They are all as bright as I would expect given their wattages.

    What coloured emulsion to buy?

Surprised this hasn't been asked recently, I have searched & had a quick look through recent posts? Hopefully it hasn't been anyway... I'm currently decorating a bare plaster room, I have applied a mist coat to the walls with Leyland Contract matt watered down 9:1 as per instructions, I'm now...

    Simple UVB Ballast wiring help

I have some experience of LampShopOnline and I will simply say it is not good. Ideally you should have got a 240v ballast (magnetic ballasts are sensitive to voltage) but the 230v one should be ok, it'll just drive the lamp a bit harder on a 240v supply. As above I'd recommend an alloy 'project...

    Simple UVB Ballast wiring help

Yes as I'm sure you've worked out you need a wire wound magnetic ballast, something like a Tridonic EC09 that's suitable for a 9w PL lamp on 240v. Hopefully that's what you've bought?

    Best LED Lamps

I have never had a Diall lamp fail prematurely, or at all in fact I & I have some that are over 4 years old now and are used regularly. Available from B&Q and Screwfix.

Lamp blowing fuse - in-line RCB?

Are you using cheap unbranded lamps? These only last a couple of hundred hours at best. Get some good quality new old stock branded lamps from the likes of Philips, Osram or GE which should actually last near their 1,000 or 2,000 life rating

Laptop for daughter ,puzzled plz help

Lots of confusing info here... -The Sims does not require anything particularly high end but I'd recommend an AMD Ryzen based laptop for their reasonably powerful built in graphics. -I strongly advise against buying second hand as you can easily end up buying a 10+ year old laptop for 2 year...

    Building new PC

I've done it loads sometimes it will boot other times not. If it does boot all drivers etc will be replaced/installed automatically. You will have to re-register Windows with a key from the new machine or a new key.

Thoughts on using tile adhesive to fill chase?

My plasterer used plaster board adhesive to fill the chases, it works fine & sets hard so shouldn't break up even if the chases aren't very deep.

    BulkHead replacements

In my opinion you're better off keeping what you have, anything led is a gamble in how reliable it'll be. If you do go for a replacement you'll want 830/3000k for warm white, 840/4000k for a cooler, neutral white

    Lighting planner

As others have said do not use down lights (spot lights) as they are awful to work under and, in my opinion, more of a fashion statement than actual useful lighting. HF fluorescent battens or LED battens if you must.

Are Down-lights Acceptable In This Ceiling?

I really hope so. I've always said that downlights are a fashion statement and will age similar to woodchip wallpaper in a few years lol!
