Is there a "permitted zone" for the ceiling?

Hi all, I'm looking to add a couple of wall lights to my living room. I'm going to take the wiring from my existing ceiling lights. I know about the 150mm "permitted zone" for running the cable straight up from the wall lights but wondered if there is a recognised route for getting the cable...

Gazco Studio 2 fire - cutting out randomly?

Thanks Ian. I don't live in flats but you're idea of someone having the same signal as me and turning the fire is a good one. I don't *think* that is what's happening though in this case. When the fire goes off it's more like it's just cutting out rather than a controlled stop. Also, when the...

Gazco Studio 2 fire - cutting out randomly?

Hi Dan Thanks for getting back to me. I did send an email to their support but they've not got back to me yet (I sent it on Saturday). The strange thing is that it's started working again? Over the weekend I decided to put it into thermostat mode and try and time how long it took to cut out...

Gazco Studio 2 fire - cutting out randomly?

I have a wall mounted Gazco Studio 2 fire with a balanced flue. The remote has a thermostat feature whereby you can set the required temperature and the remote control automatically adjusts the fire to suit. Recently, if I have the fire in the thermostat mode, it will just completely cut out...

Will there be a problem mounting a TV above a gas fire on the wall?

Thanks Charlie. I'm going to take off all the plasterboard anyway. My missus wants a nice oak shelf putting in across that fireplace (which will help divert the heat) so I'm going to strip off the plasterboard and beef up the wooden frame a bit. I'll also probably make it a bit wider (then get a...

Will there be a problem mounting a TV above a gas fire on the wall?

Thanks Stem. The flue is behind and up a bit from the fire. But I'll certainly be careful. I've just ordered a cheap thermometer from Amazon so I'll check the temps over the weekend when it arrives. I've looked at the TV that I like and you were correct that it operates up to 40C. I've also...

Will there be a problem mounting a TV above a gas fire on the wall?

Thanks for the info Stem. That's a brilliant idea!! I won't have the shelf in place but I'll have a play about and see what sort of temperature it is above the fire. Thanks :) Hi Bernard, I did think of that when I was messing about moving furniture and experimenting with where the TV would...

Will there be a problem mounting a TV above a gas fire on the wall?

Hi there, I had a 'real' flame gas fire fitted a few years ago. They built a plasterboard housing for the fire. I'm decorating my living room and would really like my TV on the wall above the fire so my plan is to remove the plasterboard, beef up the wooden frame to hold the extra weight...

Do the regulations allow me to brick up my back door?

Yep, food for thought there. Thanks. I quite like the idea of an area to take off dirty shoes etc when going to/from the garden... hmmm.... will think carefully about it. Cheers :)

Do the regulations allow me to brick up my back door?

That's brilliant Tony. Yes, it's just a normal house (upstairs and downstairs). Thanks Tony/Woody for all your help on this. It is very much appreciated :)

Do the regulations allow me to brick up my back door?

Ok, that's great. Do I need to tell anyone I'm doing it? Request permission from anyone etc?? We own the house but didn't know if I needed planning permission etc?

Do the regulations allow me to brick up my back door?

Thanks Tony. I assume it wouldn't be acceptable if it was going to be a bedroom or something? Is that correct?

Do the regulations allow me to brick up my back door?

Hi all (See drawing below). We're just planning a new kitchen and one of the ideas we've had is to put a partition wall in the kitchen to create a small section that will be a "utility room". This small section will also contain the existing back door and so I wondered if I could brick this up...

How to add a PIR outside light?

Yep, you're completely correct John. But, the lightwave solution wasn't chosen primarily for the "anti burglary" thing. It was just a happy side-effect. The main reason is so we can see the lock when we come home at night. :)

How to add a PIR outside light?

Ha ha. No, there's a timer functionality built in to lightwave. If someone was casing the house and saw lights coming on/off at various times it does give the impression of activity at the property. It's certainly much better than just darkness.

How to add a PIR outside light?

Just to conclude this thread I have arrived at a solution (with the help of everyone on here). LightwaveRF do PIR switches (which I didn't realise). So I'm simply going to swap the outside light switch front for a lightwaveRF switch front and then install an outside PIR as well. I use...

    Ok, I mis-understood. Thanks :)

How to add a PIR outside light?

Yep, I'd originally thought of a battery operated stand-alone thing but, ideally, I would like a more permanent solution but, if the soffits prove difficult then I might just do that. Thanks :)

How to add a PIR outside light?

That's a brilliant idea sparkwright! Yep, the paintwork isn't brilliant. Not as bad as the photo makes it look though. I took the photo with the flash on on my mobile. It actually doesn't look too bad normally but, you're right, it's not brilliant! :) I'll have a look at removing the soffit...

How to add a PIR outside light?

Yep, I'll take the soffits off and have a look at what's there and go from there. Hopefully it'll be straight-forward (we both know it won't be!!!) :)
