    Substandard decorating job

Lining is an absolute no no in a bathroom that isn't auto vented via a timed or humistat fan- even then its iffy, at best.

Corner joints of architrave and skirting

Not realy suitable on new wood which might still have a bit more seasoning. What you say does work on in situ wood thats settled over time. On a 2-3mm gap a decent caulk shouldnt really need a filler behind it.

    Straight cracks in ceilings

If the cracks are very fine (you picture doesnt cover size or scale) run a stanley knife along the crack. By widening it more at the surface theres more room for filler and more chance the filler will hold and prevent the crack reappearing.

    How to smooth this out?

Premixed fine surface filler, wide french blade, block and sand paper back to smooth. Shut your eyes, run hand over area- if you can feel bumps and dips, you will see them when painted.

    Using undercoat on bare wood?

Sorry to seem like a nerd, but your not saying it how I would. Primer is thinner than undercoat, primer acts as a sealer / bonder between wood and undercoat. It doesn't sit on the wood it penetrates, undercoat doesn't penetrate wood (anywhere near as much as a primer will). OP- you should...

Do you? (Its your eyes that will see it).

    Shower pump stops occasionally

Its a 2 bar ST Monsoon negative pressure pump, about 8 years old. About 1-8 times its used it will fail to pump, normally when you've done an initial rinse down and have a pile of shampoo on your noggin. Always seems to start, when it fails to start up the shower will drip for 1 to 3 minutes...

Adjacent walls - 2 different colours

Fine bead of caulk, lightly run a nail or similar point down pre the caulk setting. Makes the couple of mm next to the corner smooth so the bristles dont jump and gives a centre mark to work to.

    Decorator tips

As friends and neighbour who they use. You then get an exact idea of the persons ability, realibility and ethic from the start. Be very aware that trade sites tend to have goood and bad. If you have to use someone that you don't know phone his last few jobs and verify he is suitable. Good...

Exterior pebbledash painting - Advise required please

My attitude to works like your want to do is to do it right, use the best material solutions and hopefully get more years out the job. We all have different ways of working, but since you mentioned dashing falling, and crumbly surface texture I would still suggest a primer sealer. £25 for 4...

Exterior pebbledash painting - Advise required please

Use a sealer pre painting, some you can spray on. The paint won't bond the loose stone, and brush painting will pull more dashing off. The sealer will also help the paint stick better.

    Filling ceiling holes help

Should be ok, larger holes will need a bit of plaster board, wood, or similar to stuff in to the hole. I tend to use a quick dry caulk to shrink the hole pre filling Any packing should be a few mm inside the hole to allow for a decent filler top coat. Most water base filler will be suitable...

    Piles rather than full dig?

London terrace property with difficult rear access. I'm considering a large rear ground floor extension, extending 6m back and 2m out on the side. So the new footprint would need 6m + 4m (back face) + 9m (return to main house body) of trench work, likely 1600mm down. I'm I being daft to...

Permitted Development - where exactly is the ridge line (highest part of the roof)?

Since the backside of the roof will come off for the dormer you could raise the front roof a bit to get extra head room. Pretty sure thats a full plaining application, although everyother loft conversion firm (round my way) do it. I take it you've added in the loss of height that the steels...

Green slime running down my pink pebble dash wall

Green slime, or do you mean it got so damp that moss spores have started to grow on the dashing?

    Painting tip

When ever you use paint stash the colour / code / type and makers detail in a home projects note book (or pc / ipad file). Then in 8 years time when you want to redo the job in the same colour, your be able to

    How to paint staircase spindles?

Stay with the wood, zooming in tonthe picture the spindles seem fine. A paint finish does get chipped and will fade and thus need a routine recoat every 7-10 years. A nautural oil / stain wont need anywhere near the same work regime and the fading just looks natural.

Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt...3 coats and counting

Did the ceiling get a wash (or would a wash have been required)? For a colour change (it was magnolia / 15 years old) to white it will take 3 full coats. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I'd have mostly obliterated your blue with 2 coats of a trade white matt and then gone with 2 coats of...

    Painting Exterior Front Door

Did this door last week in a weathersheild trade QD satin. Used the dark undercoat first. Between coats I used a 120 grade 3m green scratchy (they look like pots scrubbers and you can find them in automotive paint suppliers). Pre any paint it was 120g sheets, mid level wire wool and then the...
