Disaster in the making? Advice needed please

whats above? which way do the joists / rafters run? I'm no builder but I don't think that thermalite can be load bearing can it? given that you can cut it with a saw and dig out socket backboxes with a butter knife ( well nearly.. ).. surely it's too soft to support any kind of load and would...

    creaking pipes?

how do you stop creaking pipes? every half hour or so ( as the heating cycles ) the pipes in my bedroom click / creak as they expand in the clips.. I'm thinking something like WD40 but I'm unsure of the effects that may have long term on the copper or what effects it may have on me when...

Looks like two spurs off a spur,

tested where? tested what? is that 1 ohm ring continuity at the board or infinity ( as in 1 to the far left of the meter with blank digits after it ) between pins on the socket? if it's the later then that means nothing, there should be no connection between pins on a socket with...

    New cooker

no spares in the board? 32A should be big enough.. theres always the option of getting a sparky in, they may have spares.. failing that a new CU costs about £100 fully populated while a smaller CU with the henleys and extra cabling won't be that much cheaper, plus then there's still the...

Digital timeclock back up facility (Non Diy)

for the amount of units required, it's probably easier to put them all on permanently and use individual timers for each light since half already have them.. there would be no dusk sensors then though unless retro fitted to each lampost.. another alternative would be to wire one permanent...

Digital timeclock back up facility (Non Diy)

wouldn't a "delay off" timer have been more appropriate? simply comes on when they rest of the lights do then switches off after x amount of hours? or do they want them off at a specific time and back on again early? ( IE off at midnight but back on for 5am until switch off? )

    don't shout at me..

How do you contact the DNO and how do you know who the DNO is for a given property? I know that I'm a qualified sparky, but it's never been something that I've had to do before as I generally work for a larger contractor or company and they deal with all of this.. added to the fact that...

Shower switch, must be an easier way.

side entry rather than back entry, also, if using back entry the hole would be in a different place rather than central.. as said the knockout hole is a little tight for 2 10mm's. add to that the lack of chamfered bits of the side knockouts inside the box and you have a little more room for...

fan ducting and vent cover that can be fitted from inside?

that looks vaguely rude.. they do a vent cover that folds in half to pass through the duct, same thing with the string and glue..

Shower switch, must be an easier way.

looks good, I'll have to try those next time I have to.. think the ones I was given were crabtree, but the square ones.. and yes, used a 47mm deep surface backbox.. might use a deep metal one next time and screw it to a batten across the rafters.. or even a twin ( ie 2 singles in one box...

Shower switch, must be an easier way.

After doing 2 shower pull cords with 10mm T+E these past few weeks, I really hope that someone is coming up with a better way of wiring them. It's ridiculous trying to bend the 10mm into the terminals and even worse trying to cram it all into the single backbox and get the front on. I'm...

    full rewire, how long?

well i finally finished it, 10 days on my own, 2 1\2 with a useless bloke.... not too bad I thought given the amount of time spent running up and down stairs and round the outside of the house ( kitchen at the back and can't go through the lounge.. ).. they sent me somewhere else wednesday...

Garage light to turn on when doors open

you wouldn't need 2 way switching, just put the relay contacts in parallel to the existing switch.. I would presume that the door opener lights either go off when the door closes or are timed to go off after so long? are you very likely to need to have the door open for a long time with the...

    full rewire, how long?

the works busy body came round today to get the timesheets.. "so you'll be finished monday then..." ( note the lack of question mark.. ) I said "erm, probably not.. it takes 5 or 6 days for two blokes to do a full rewire when occupied with limits set on working times" He said "we've got...
