    Local authorities, and carpets

When my tenant left I 'cleaned' the main room carpet. Rented a carpet cleaning machine for 24 hours. I went over the carpet 6 times with that machine. I then used our own carpet cleaning machine another 3 times before I was happy the carpet was fit for someone else. Had I been re-letting I'd...

Might be about to have a falling-out with my MOT station...

Mate of mine and his girlfriend were enjoying the pleasures of the back seat of his first car, a Renault 4, when the the piece of bodywork that held the fixed end of the torsion spring failed. When they told the story later it was good for a laugh until we realised what could have happened if...

Cutting and hanging internal doors a DIY job?

You need to measure the door aperture in the door lining (frame) top, middle and bottom. Also measure the height at both sides. Record those measurements. Hopefully the door aperture will be a standard size. If it isn't then you should buy doors the next size up, you have a maximum of 16mm (8mm...

    Moving

As much as I/we like living where we are we have also considered our old age - we live in a village that has a pub and a butchers; limited public transport - bus route between 2 towns 4 times a day and a 'works' bus that leaves before 7AM and returns at 6PM. Taxis are just about possible during...

    Clicking clutch pedal

All the Golf's I had cable clutches, as did VW group Seat's I owned. The cable on the Seat pulled through the bulkhead/firewall.

    Clicking clutch pedal

Check the brackets that support the (Clutch) pedal check they are not broke or twisting. As it's VW group car I guess it's a cable clutch - check where the clutch cable outer is held on the 'firewall' - is that panel OK. If those areas are OK then change the cable. It could be the start inhibit...

Lotus Cars Ltd, the Motability con, and more....

My present car is an ex-mobility scheme vehicle - a Honda Civic, one of the last British built ones. Think the Mobility scheme leased the car rather than bought it as I bought at 4 years old from a Honda dealer, not the suppling dealer but it had gone back into the Honda approved cars stock. I...

How’s Rachael from accounts getting on…..

I guess this suggestion will upset a lot of people but I think that the UK should copy the USA idea and issue Food stamps rather than a monetary sum - can easily be the same value. With Food Stamps the value can only be spent on Food - No alcohol, No tobacco, No Drugs; Change in the form of...

    Digital ID

I'd say state ran Digital ID has started already surreptitiously - just had to renew my driving license. On the application form they want to know Passport number (OK that's for the 'photo on the license) but also asking for NI number - that you can offer voluntarily at present. In my...

one-coat recommendation for this window frame situation?

Have a look at this; this is how others do opening out the glazing rabbit. As for bare wood treatment I'd use something like a wood preservative in the slot (Groove). Oil based wood primer is available in the UK - just search on the internet.

    BT and fiber

The batteries used (or at last they were in my day) are 100AH 6volt batteries in stacks of 8 designed to be kept in a 'float' charge state. Depending the load imposed on the power rack there could be 1, 2 or 3 stacks in a power rack. Such batteries were originally designed for Alarm systems...

    car boot find

Cases that 'clip' together but to ensure the case cannot be opened because it has been glued as well. You then need to know where and how much heat to apply to soften the glue.

Post Office - stopping the junk

After much complaining about it, thinking about it in the end I decided that accepting Junk mail is the way to go as the delivery service (Royal Mail) does get paid to deliver such (at a lower rate than what we pay). If it keeps the service going then I'm all for it.
