Sorry no pictures as it was at my Mums house which is about 40miles away. It just looks like a normal brass elbow 22mm at one end and a female fitting at the other but it was too big for a 1/2" float valve.

Yes, can turn off his mains, stop cock in the kitchen. Is that's all that is required to stop the hot water from the tap? I would have thought I would need to turn something off at the HW cylinder or it would continue to run until it drained off.
