    Main water bonding question

Just looking further into this, it seems that from the third paragraph of this; https://www.diynot.com/wiki/Electrics%3Amain_equipotential_bonding that what has been done to my house is in fact right after-all... "Main protective bonding should be applied using copper conductors (other metals...

    Main water bonding question

It wouldn't be easy to move the cable (at least, not without extending it), as it comes down from the void between ground and first floor. Surely the pipework inside the hose should be bonded as well as the main, shouldn't it? If not, I suppose it makes sense to take the wire off from the pipe...

    Main water bonding question

Thanks, that does make sense, even though it isn't what I was hoping to hear. I'm tempted to either replace the plastic pipe with another copper bit, or use some more cable and another two earth clamps to make the connection around it that way.

    Main water bonding question

Hi everyone, Having finally had a full house rewire done, I had a question about how the main water pipe has been bonded, if I could get some advice on it that would be great. Coming out of the kitchen floor is the copper water main, which runs about 4 inches to the main stop tap. This is...

    Wiring in cavity

Only a DIY'er here, but I wouldn't worry about that at all. The damp proof course will still be in between the courses of bricks, where it needs to be, and won't affect the cables. As long as they are not damaged (cuts in the sheathing etc) from their journey, they will be fine. HTH

Need a new fire, what type though...?

Thanks, yes, I'm going to get my RGI to have a look before buying anything - I may end up with a new electric fire in the end... haha. It's a surprise to see it like that though, I would have assumed that the flue should all have been sealed. I'll let you know what the outcome is - thanks...

Need a new fire, what type though...?

Hi, please find below a couple of pictures of the fire as requested. One thing I did notice is that it is not fixed to the wall in any way, and can be lifted away from the wall of the fire-place, outwards into the room...! Does the rectangular bit at the back look like a balanced flue - I'm...

Need a new fire, what type though...?

Thanks for the replies, please find some answers below; @45yearsagasman no probs, I'll take some wider pictures on Monday and add them here. @ianmcd, no, there's no wall mounted terminal, it is connected to the chimney that leads to the roof. Thanks to everyone who has responded, but I'm none...

Need a new fire, what type though...?

Hi, With a recent house purchase, I have inherited an old, knackered, gas fire "Cannon Coalridge category 1N fire (GC# 3213258)". I am having major work done on the house, and, as part of this, I am having this fire replaced. Basically, I need to know if this is a type 1, type 2, balanced...

    Specc'ing a rewire

My thoughts were mainly that, with there being generally only one single socket in each room, a substantial proportion of the ring(s) would have to be replaced and/or have a lot added to them. What is a bit more frustrating is that the lighting is OK (points and switches where I want them...

    Specc'ing a rewire

Thanks everyone, some food for thought. I'm not interested in 'smart' home stuff - I have to fight enough buggy electronic stuff at work to want to install it at home, and allow hackers to control my lights... Each to their own, but it's not for me. Ditto for USB mains sockets, ethernet wiring...

    Specc'ing a rewire

One for the Sparkies on here. I'm fairly soon (I hope!) going to exchange on a house that needs to be rewired. I had hoped to get away with a bit of updating and a few additions, but looking at it in more detail (VIR cables around the meter, no earth on lighting, very few sockets, much...

    RCD tripping

If all the wiring tests OK, you may have noise on the mains coming into the building that is tripping random breakers. Is this in an industrial area? I'm thinking things like welders, large motors etc. Might have to bring in someone with some equipment who can do some power quality analysis...

Advice Sought on Power Loss to Sockets

The RCD is tripping; it sounds to me like a neutral-to-earth-fault if the sockets come back 'on' when you are holding the RCD 'on' (don't get in the habit of this, it can be dangerous!). Probably due to a wire miss-connected to one of the sockets that's been removed? Switch everything off and...

    1-way / 2-way vintage MK light switches

Local sparkies must be binning these by the dozen I would have thought... Would a case of beer not secure a couple from one of the lads on here? Easier than trying to make one up, I'd have thought.
