Extension doorway from kitchen - is this needed?

I was suggesting that a kitchen worktop in front of an escape window is far more compliant than people placing dressers with fixed mirrors in upstairs windows, which is/was a common sight. Quite how did my comment come across as meaning I thought such dressers were a good idea?

Extension doorway from kitchen - is this needed?

Well I’ve measured the existing one and yes it is, it just needs to be a bit lower (currently at 1200mm) for the new one. I’m not sure what you mean by the kitchen units reference. Yes there will be units but they’re lower than the window. Certainly not as bad as an upstairs dresser with...

Foundation design - drain crossing at corner

That's good to know. I know I only build for a hobby but I think if I weren't I'd try and avoid the concrete manhole if possible and the buried bend that goes to next door. I guess an oblique junction mightthe a way around it? Untitled by mfarrow posted 15 Apr 2012 at 4:27 PMUntitled by...

Extension doorway from kitchen - is this needed?

That's what I thought @^woody^ until I started reading the regs and documents like this which implied the window would be OK: https://www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/media/1809/building-control-guidance-notes-means_of_escape.pdf @wgt52: we get on without the kitchen door today, so I think we'll be...

Extension doorway from kitchen - is this needed?

Hi In pondering the many facets of our small kitchen extension, one thing I thought was always going to be required was a doorway from the kitchen to outside, owing to the inner room (Utility) adjoining it. I'm reading the regulations now though and I can't seem to find anything that matches...

Foundation design - drain crossing at corner

Just to close the thread, which I forgot to do, the Ancon solution was considered a "nice idea" but ultimately they needed calculations to justify it, so big old lump of concrete it is. On the "new chamber in corner" idea, yes this would be good except I know the falls in the sewer pipe are...

Electric trains ( from Converting 3 phase to single phase )

Sometimes the TNO will install load sharing equipment on site (though I’m not entirely sure what this consists of) to balance out a 2-phase supply across 3 phases. 400kV is generally the norm now unless not available. 132kV was the maximum possible when the original networks were installed...

Foundation design - drain crossing at corner

Good point, but I'm not sure I could lose the step in the IC, it was very close when installed originally (ie small block of wood under a 1.8m level to get level).

Foundation design - drain crossing at corner

Hi I'm in the middle of a discussion with the BCO regarding the proposal to cross the corner of an extension where an existing 4" drain sits. The drain sits at a centreline of 530mm below ground level, so around 470mm above the bottom of any trench. I proposed a full fill foundation with 50mm...

    Clay pipe couplings

Thames water is one of the wierd ones I think. Steel band in middle helps prevent stepping, as does aligning/fixing pipe first before slipping the coupler across the joint...

    Clay pipe couplings

There were/are some wierd water companies that insist on clay to clay. Ours is Severn Trent who didn’t. Rubber coupling will be fine, use the ones which the large stainless band in the middle too to align the joint and keep it there.

Perhaps you're meant to turn it off then on again when the desired dimming level is witnessed?

    Best adhesive for skirting board

Into my sand & cement plaster and cinder blocks combo I use the following. - Drill skirting near the top of the flat section with 6mm wood drill. At suitable intervals along length - Place skirting on wall then masonry drill 6mm bit holes to around 3" - insert red rawl plug into hole in...

Mounting Consumer Unit outside within enclosure

The "outside" industries such as the railways and communications don't worry too much about the upper limit as it's not usually that hot, and certainly not for long. It may approach the limits but the likes of cabinet manufacturers and assemblers don't seem overly concerned by the threat of an...

Mounting Consumer Unit outside within enclosure

You're best getting a little heater (say a Pentagon 20W) plus thermostat set to 5°C. Anything lower carries a risk of condensation and corrosion.

American sockets in the UK... ever?

Might be the publisher. The dimensions and addition of a switch has it primed for a possible re-draw from an original. If you scratch gently with a craft knife Tris, what do you see underneath? ;)

Can opener only be replaced on PVCu window?

Hi We have a side-hung window which has always had a bad gap at the top, but not a huge overlap at the bottom. The top hinge also looks knackered and the window is bowing outwards at the top due to the hinge issue. Having measured up, it seems the difference between the opening and the...

    USB charge time.

Well it still works. I usually need to transfer 20+ files at a time and the heavier cable or the stubby one my old BlackBerry came with are the only two which perform adequately. I hate having to rebuild a camera full of file thumbnails every time it reconnects.
