    Dashcams

I’ve had dashcams for many years in a number of different cars, I disliked the way they attached to the windscreen and looked like an afterthought. In my last 2 cars I’ve installed cameras from a company called FitCamX who supply cameras fitted in a shroud that replaces the original one meaning...

If I wrap my keyless car key in lead sheet, will that stop it’s signal being transmitted?

Some keyless entry fobs can be turned off (worth googling your particular model) so they don’t transmit a signal, mine is a “smart” fob that goes into sleep mode when no movement is detected. A quality Faraday pouch or box is a relatively cheap way of preventing this type of theft, another...

Best way to decommission existing wired alarm?

As above, if your new sensors are going in the same positions or nearby then use the existing wiring where you can. Same with CCTV systems, wired always first choice.

    Alarm Identification please

My son has moved into a property with an alarm installed, however all he was given was the alarm code and no manuals. Please can someone identify what system it is so that we can source the user manual. Thanks in advance

    Professional or not ?

You can see the recess behind the brown tape where the strap should be fitted, similar to attached detail.

    Professional or not ?

No, but on a positive note at least you have a cylinder thermostat (assuming it works)

Central heating pipes in concrete floor, best practice?

As above use Hep2o Barrier pipe in Hep2o conduit, water regs may require pipes in solid floors (excluding UFH pipe work) should be removable. You could use cold form bends to come out of the floor and into the wall or use half of a Hep2o conduit box with a plywood cover with similar at the...

Central heating pipes in concrete floor, best practice?

You could use Hep2o in flexible conduit with cold form bends to take the pipe from the screed to vertical in the wall behind the radiator then compression fittings with chrome copper to the radiator valves.

Compression fittings, better to replace brass with copper olives?

I keep a bag of copper olives in my toolbox in case I have to break into or connect to plastic pipe, in which case I swop the brass olives for copper and use stainless steel inserts. Otherwise, I just use the fittings “as they come” and never had any major problems.

    Texecom veritas R8

Have a look in the manuals section for your manual, that should take you through the programming options. Default codes are 1234 and 4321, if the panel has defaulted these should work unless the Engineer Code has been locked, in which case it’s time for a new panel if you can’t get hold of the...

    Testing pipework

Yes, linking the F & R pipes together is fine.

    Testing pipework

With demountable pushfit fittings general rule of thumb would be a low pressure test (.5 - 1.0 bar) followed by a further test around 1.5 x working pressure for about an hour. Older style pushfit fittings (“O” ring first / grab ring second) require an increased pressure test of 18 bar. This is...

    What liners for this plastic

The pipe looks to me as though it’s Hep2o barrier pipe, they used the Red markings to denote that it’s barrier pipe (standard or solid wall pipe has black marking) they also used the H and V depth insertion marks on the pipe. I would definitely use a stainless steel (Hep2o) insert with a...

Do you recommend Push Fit Copper Fittings?

Did some work for English Heritage quit a few years ago, no hot works allowed in the roof space.

    Does this look normal?

I would imagine (if installed as I would ) there will be no more joints on the 10mm pipe until the radiator valves, so if no leak visible on the manifolds and none at the rad valves it’s unlikely to be on the plastic side, unless there are elbows where the pipes come out from the wall / floor...

    Does this look normal?

Quite normal practice, 22mm Flow and Return into manifolds with a number of 10mm pipes serving your radiators. As already mentioned, plastic 10mm has a much reduced internal bore than copper pipe, having said that the majority of new build properties are piped in this way, they can become...

Which Boiler should I go with.

I had a similar issue with my daughters boiler, her existing Glowworm Ultimate had a rear flue, I couldn’t drop the boiler enough to reuse the hole for the flue and couldn’t raise the flue because of restricted ceiling height in the utility room. I opted for a Vaillant EcoFit Pure 615 with a...
