Clipping cables behind kitchen base units

What is the recommended method for running electric cables behind kitchen base units? The OSG covers cables sunk into the wall in plenty of detail and safe zones in this respect but not clipped direct. Reason I ask is we have one wall brick & plaster and the other wall stud & packed with...

Options for ring main in wall insulation

Even though that is the case according to the regs, would it not be better practice to put a 20A MCB on the circuit (even if it is a ring) since the cable will only have a max rating slightly higher than 20A.

Options for ring main in wall insulation

So essentially whichever way I do it ring/radial and method 102 or Ref A the max current carrying capacity of the cable is going to be either 20 or 21A for 2.5mm T&E. Since the outbuilding is small (2x2.5m) and will only have a boiler, fridge/freezer and combined washingmachine/tumble dryer -...

Single skin outbuilding insulation + window reveals

We have been advised by BCO to insulate a single skin outhouse up to current standards by adding 100mm insulation and board/skim. This will be done first by putting a breathable membrane against the wall held in place by 2x2 tanalised battens at 400mm centres. Then with 50mm Kingspan insulation...

Options for ring main in wall insulation

We are installing 100mm of insulation to a single skin brick outhouse which will become a utility area. This will comprise of 50mm Kingspan between 2x2 treated battens and then cross battened with another 50mm of insulation. This will then be covered with plasterboard and skimmed. There will be...

    Cleaning tarnished/discoloured gas hob rings

The metal rings around my gas hob have become discoloured/tarnished over the years. What is the best way to clean them? Have tried a fairly aggressive oven cleaner but that turns the metal dull in colour. Not sure what type of metal it is - looks to be a cast metal of some sort.

40mm gravel for driveway suitable ??

A couple of years back we ripped up an old tarmac driveway which had disintegrated and are now ready to replace it with gravel. The surface underneath (hardcore) is suitably compact having had numerous cars/lorries drive over it since. We were looking at a 40mm Trent gravel as aesthetically...

Blown Rendered wall + paint flaking

I have a rendered blockwork retaining wall in the garden which I build about 6 months ago. I painted it using some expensive 'self-cleaning' paint in the hope it would stay clean. Needless to say the paint has been so effective it has all flaked off and also some of the rendering has blown as...

Bark chipping for play area - DIY

I'm planning a play area for the kids in the back garden by covering an area of earth with bark chippings. Since I have a load of wood (logs, branches etc) from various trees I have chopped down over the years I was wondering if I could hire a chipper and create the chippings myself. I was...

Newly laid Indian sandstone slabs lifted & pointing crac

When you say mortar, presumably it would be a sharp sand/cement mix and not building sand/cement ? Also what kind of strength should it be for laying on concrete 4:1 ?

Newly laid Indian sandstone slabs lifted & pointing crac

I laid a new patio using Indian Sandstone late last year. Part of the patio was laid over a compacted base of sharp sand/aggregrate using a 10-1 sharp semi-dry sand/cement mix and 4-1 moist mix for pointing. This bit is ok. The other half of the patio was laid on existing concrete steps. The...

Boiler diagnosis - CH on standby, pump running but no flame!

It fired up briefly with the combustion case off but went back into standby again within 5-10secs. In the meantime I contacted Ferroli technical support who thought it might be the temperature sensors on the IN/OUT flow pipes. Would appreciate a second opinion if that is a likely cause.

Boiler diagnosis - CH on standby, pump running but no flame!

I've got a problem with a Ferroli Tempra 30 system boiler - approx 6 yrs old. The programmer and room stat are both calling for CH/HW but the boiler will ignite briefly (5-10secs max) and then go into standby mode (flashing green LED). Once in standby the pump will remain on but the fan will...

Threaded Hot Water tank connector - HELP!

is that easy enough to do with a standard torch & solder soldering a brass fitting onto copper? - whats the best way to do it? Presumably I would have to strip off some of the insulation around the top.

Threaded Hot Water tank connector - HELP!

I'm replacing my hot water cylinder and everything went to plan & no leaks apart from the top HW outlet connector. Its a 1" thread and I've got a 22mm x 1" 90 degree elbow. No matter how tight I have it or how much PTFE I use, it still leaks. The thread on the tank is starting to get a bit...
