Wiring not in safe zones - need mechanical protection or no?

Hi All, I'm in the process of re-wiring a room. Most of the cable runs will be in safe zones, but in a couple of places this won't be practical. Everything is protected by a 30mA RCD at the CU. I've been tearing my hair out trying to establish whether or not I need additional protection...

    inaccessible Junction Boxes

Yes, I've read some of it but lots just seems like slightly pedantic arguments about exactly whether a certain type of box is certified to what standard and so on! Thanks both, I'll go with that. Adam

    inaccessible Junction Boxes

Hi All, My understanding is that the regs require that joints in inaccessible locations (which presumably includes ceiling voids?) should be crimped, and specifically, not made using screw-down terminals. This seems (to me) to imply that a traditional "junction box" system for wiring...

    Pipes/electrics under lime plaster

OK, thanks. I guess sinking them deep enough to be flush with the wall is my "back-up" option. I was hoping to be able to save a few mm though. (I figured that people put cable & capping under plaster...) Adam

Bump. Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions! If so, please point me in the right direction! Adam

    Pipes/electrics under lime plaster

Hi All, I'm in the process of re-modelling our kitchen. The house is 19th century with blue lias walls on the ground floor. The stonework has been re-pointed with cement everywhere and had cement plaster on the internal walls. There was a significant rising damp problem! I haven't figured out...

    Budget SDS drill advice

Looks good :). I've got a couple of other Ryobi tools which I like so I'll probably go with that. There are "refurbished" ones on eBay for £60 which I might investigate... That does look cleaner and probably cheaper (as I'm only doing a small amount of chasing). Thanks for the pointer :). The...

    Budget SDS drill advice

Huh, is that true? If so it's a massive shame. The reviews are the best thing about Screwfix - it was annoying when they changed the site so you can't order by rating etc now :( Can anyone recommend another decent tools site with lots of user reviews? Adam

    Budget SDS drill advice

Thanks, I did look at this one, but ruled it out based on it being too heavy and not having a safety clutch... Cheers, Adam

    Budget SDS drill advice

Hi All, I'm about to do some renovations on my house and am going to need an SDS drill for drilling a couple of holes in 2' thick stone rubble walls. I've never used an SDS drill before, but it seems if I get a 3 function one, I can also use it for removing old plaster, lifting quarry tiles...

Creter: Stupid gimmick or handy time-saver?

They're going for £15 delivered on ebay. Clearly it's just a glorified tarpaulin - but I did do a bit of a test on an old bit of plastic sheeting, and I think the handles and sides might make it work OK. If it saves me spending half an hour washing the drive every time I mix some mortar or...

Creter: Stupid gimmick or handy time-saver?

Has anyone actually used one of these: http://youtu.be/2Cw-QrTJ7ks Does it effectively mix the, um, mix? How much can you do in one go? Thanks, Adam

    Electric Hand Planer Advice

Hi All, I'm thinking of buying my dad a planer for Christmas (and/or birthday!). He does general DIY & woodworking. From a bit of browsing, it seems I need: - true base plate - difficult to find this out before buying :( - switchable exhaust - collection bag My budget is £40 - £90. My...

What's the difference between subbase and ballast?

    Thanks, that's helpful :)

What's the difference between subbase and ballast?

Thanks, but how did you find out what's in the ballast? And can it be used as a sub-base and if so, why does anyone buy the MOT1? And if not, how come? Surely they're both just a mixture of gravel and sand? Thanks Adam

What's the difference between subbase and ballast?

And can I just use one dumpy bag (e.g. this or this) for both mixing concrete and the base it sits on? (This will be for a small (1.2m x 1.0m) pad to support some blocks with an IBC full of rainwater on top.) Thanks a lot, Adam

    Fire Lining Old Stairs

Thanks for the replies. What does the fire-lining achieve? Is there any point if I can't do the wood tongue&groove wall which forms one side of the stairwell? Cheers, Adam

    Fire Lining Old Stairs

Hi All, We have an old (1850) house. There is a wooden staircase, with a (damp) plastered brick wall to one side and wooden tongue & groove on the other side. When we bought the house the surveyor said: Can anyone tell me what this involves, or point me in the right direction? I've done a...

Connect 68mm downpipe to 25mm blue pipe?

68mm pipe is used for all the guttering on my house, ranging from an enormous area on the main roof, to this small area on one side of the garage. The flow off the garage definitely does not need the full 68mm! As for clogging up, that's a good point - I'll just need to be careful about a filter...
