Creter: Stupid gimmick or handy time-saver?

ROFL, Two people to mix 4 shovel fulls.

Would be more cost effective to hire 8 (add your favourite nationality) for a month.

if it costs less than £3 pounds then it has its uses if not its expensive

if it has indeed multi uses and the price is reasonable then yes, I could see people buying it.

It's a variation on an old trick that,Scouts and army chefs have used bags to mix things for years . I've mixed small amounts in a plastic bag before now, just use the mix and throw the bag away.

I was particularly impressed with the site brickies in hi viz vests on site, mixing up enough for a dozen bricks. Yeah, I can just see this catching on (not) on building sites the length and breadth of this land.
You'll easily recognise building sites where someone is using this to mix mortar,,,,, by the sounds of helpless laughter.

They're going for £15 delivered on ebay.

Clearly it's just a glorified tarpaulin - but I did do a bit of a test on an old bit of plastic sheeting, and I think the handles and sides might make it work OK.

If it saves me spending half an hour washing the drive every time I mix some mortar or concrete then it appeals!

However, if you can only mix a few shovel-fulls at a time then it's probably a waste of time for me... hence why I was wondering if anyone had actually used it! Anyone going to own up? ;)

I am sure that read about a court case involving a death of a labourer while using one of these.

IIRC, he laughed so much that he fell into the bag and either choked on the mix or got poured into some footings, I don't remember which.

I did end up buying one of these so thought I'd write up some comments in case anyone else is ever interested...

I've actually been quite pleased with it. It's handy and portable so for small jobs is very convenient. You can do the mixing (which is very easy and quick - much easier than using a shovel) somewhere messy then carry the whole bag round - for instance to take it inside.

As I said above it is just a glorified (small) tarp, but the raised sides and handles make it work.

Downsides:
There's not really much point using it for larger quantities - maybe a couple of "major" bags is as much as you'd want to do at once. Also, mine's ended up with a couple of holes and tears where I've been careless with a trowel, so the material could be a bit sturdier - though it patches up with some gaffa tape OK.
