    Tools rusting in cellar

JohnD - Thanks for the link. I do have vents on both sides of the house, however this is actually a room (possibly an old coal room???) within the cellar, so it has only one vent located in this room. I hope this makes sense?

    Tools rusting in cellar

It does, but would it need to stay on constantly?

    Tools rusting in cellar

@TheVictorian - The walls aren't dripping wet, however, the brickwork is crumbling away and any metalwork in sight is rusted. I've unblocked the vent which was partially filled with rubble, but I'm not sure if this is enough as I can't feel much air coming in. @JohnD - That's a great idea...

    Tools rusting in cellar

Your right.....I'd be happy to install a radiator and this would be the long-term solution, but I'd need time and finances to get this done. But for now, what if I used a dehumidifier instead? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my own understanding was that if the external wall vents are...

    Tools rusting in cellar

Thanks guys. Surely running radiators will cost a lot of money as I've opened up the vents to cool down the cellar? Another problem is that I've installed my new burglar alarm panel within the cellar, so does this mean that will also rust away?

    Tools rusting in cellar

Hi guys, I've moved to a 1935 semi-detached house, and it's got a basement which within a month of moving has caused most of my tools and any other metal items I placed within it to rust. I then realised that some of the air vents were partially blocked and air circulation was limited, so...

Recommend a decent DIY wired alarm system

Please accept my sincere apologies guys as I've been reading up about it and have now decided against a wired system as it's too complex for an amateur like me. I'm going to have to go for a wireless version. So sorry again.

Really appreciated SecureIam. So what alarm shall I go for?

Recommend a decent DIY wired alarm system

Thanks very much. @ sparky - I checked out Alert website and the only complete kits found were: "Pyronix Secure Kit Complete" - £86.59 and "Pyronix & Castle Care Tech Euro 46SM Grade 2 Wired Kit" - £127.95, so which one were you referring to? @ secureiam - What type of wiring do these alarms...

Recommend a decent DIY wired alarm system

Cheers sparky. Isn't the texecom supposed to be very complex? In the past I've installed a Friedland SA3 Wireless alarm, but never done a wired one. I'm up for a challenge though, lol. Also can you recommend a website or place to buy one from? Lastly what is an euromini?

Recommend a decent DIY wired alarm system

Hello, I've currently got no alarm at our property and were hoping someone could give me a few recommendations for a DIY HARD-WIRED system that I could install myself. My original budget was approx £500, however I've had an unexpected flood damage to the property, costing me hundreds of...

    Security against burglaries

I think Daveheens is correct in saying that the squares are just separators in the framework. I don't mind getting rid of or keeping them, so long as I get the laminate glass solution for the cheapest possible price.

    Security against burglaries

Thanks for the explanation gazman. I'm happy to go with the ABD lock. Regarding the laminated glass though, the french/patio doors in the house don't have one full glass, but small squares like this:- So would this be a lot more expensive to replace?

    Security against burglaries

Thanks god and gazman16. Both of your suggestions are great and worth considering. The owners told me that the doors were put in approx 2009 when they had the extension built, so I would say they are pretty new. I can see on ebay, you can pick up a retractable security grille for approx £400...

    Security against burglaries

Thank you. I'm happy in taking your excellent advice and removing the external handles an lock access..I'll have to wait until I get the property before I can judge what it needs, however I would be very grateful if you could kindly help me find a burglar alarm that can detect glass breakage...

No it's the rear entrance door, but sometimes you need that access, don't you?

    Security against burglaries

Thanks doggit. Don't laugh, but I was thinking other than implementing the great measures you've mentioned, that I drill a hole in the left & right walls and put an iron bar through at night time as an extra security measure. This would stop an intruder from opening the doors. Does this sound...

    Security against burglaries

Thanks very much for your replies. I think you guys have slightly misunderstood. I haven't bought the house as yet and I'm in the middle of purchasing it. The owner has a bog-standard house alarm and no glass break / vibration sensors. How would I get in myself without external handles...

    Security against burglaries

Hello everyone, I'm currently looking at a property which we've fell in love with. However it has a double upvc french/patio door, which I don't like as I wouldn't feel safe. I'm wondering how we can improve the security for it without having to lose it as it brings a lot of natural light...

Building a fence on higher ground & bungalow questions

Thanks Nakajo. The greywater butt can be bought for around £30, although it won't be needed because the current owner already has one. However how much does a drip irrigation system cost and how would this work? Would it use rainwater?
