That was my reaction too. I guess taking the wheel out would leave the potential for 0-9 confusion that the manufacturers wanted to avoid.

    Meter puzzle

Here is what the video posted by @flameport shows. The left hand red digit tracks usage in units of kWh. From 0 to 1 units usage, the white units digit is in sync with the red digit. After 1 unit has been used, the white units digit stops for 1 unit's usage, so that at 3 units usage it...

    Meter puzzle

So the left hand red digit tracks usage proportionately.

Ingenious, if a bit "counter" intuitive.

    Meter puzzle

@Murdochcat It's higher than the estimates that I got by filling in a few wizards. These don't ask many questions and probably return a median value from a broad distribution - so much depends on what people are doing with the appliances. So yes, whether it's high or not is a moot point...

    Meter puzzle

We do have high electricity usage - gas central heating, but electric cooker and shower. But that's not the whole story - we use less than 2 units a day on the shower. The high usage made me look closely at the meter, and wonder if it was recording correctly.

    Meter puzzle

It does display digits 0 to 9 fully, but there is a twist. Transitions (0 to 1), (1 to 2), ..., (8 to 9) occur gradually with use, transition (9 to 0) is a jump immediately after 9 units are used. So it measures the use of 9 units, immediately displays 10 and keeps going. Then it goes (10 to...

    Meter puzzle

Yes, usage will depend very much on the appliances, and we have an electric shower and cooker. So 4860 kWh is not outlandish when I monitor usage, but there is still a gap. That will be partly explained by the "restaurant receipt" effect where the total always seems to be more than the sum of...

    Meter puzzle

Good question. Say the meter starts at xxx00. That right hand units digit gradually moves until it shows a 1 fully in the display - that is one unit consumed. Similarly xxx02 fully shown means two units consumed ... and xxx08 is fully shown when eight units have been consumed, and xxx09 is...

    Meter puzzle

Our electricity usage seemed high - 4860 kWh per year for a 3 bedroom semi-detached house - so I started looking more closely at my meter. It's a Sangamo Weston S200.16. It has 5 white digits whose value is submitted as a reading, and two red digits to the right of these. The red digits might...

    Baxi HE 50 Plus Lockout

That makes a lot of sense, and I can see that it's a good policy. So far, I have asked a Gas Safe Registered engineer to look at the boiler but he didn't really get to the root of the problem (he replaced the spark electrode). He took about 2 hours, so I'm reluctant to go back to him. Are...

    Could it be the pump?

    Baxi HE 50 Plus Lockout

A Baxi HE 50 Plus is locking out the ignition, but only during cold/humid spells. When the boiler is cold there is a sound of the gas igniting normally and the ignition light goes on for a few seconds, but after that it cuts out. So there is no problem in warm weather, and in cold weather...

Push button toilet - running water (sometimes)

Just to clarify, We can't rely on visitors/children pressing the button gently. Also, I'd rather fix the mechanism than remember to be gentle with it - it seems to be getting worse over time. Any thoughts as to what might be making it stick, and how to fix it?

Push button toilet - running water (sometimes)

Hi, Could anyone advise on this problem with a push-button toilet? If the button is pressed gently, the toilet flushes correctly and the cistern fills and stops. If the button is pushed hard, the cistern does not fill, and water keeps running. Taking a look inside the cistern - what...

Ignition lockout on Baxi HE 50 Plus

Well, this is what happened. I chose a company and booked the service, "Would you like the engineer to phone 30 minutes before he will arrive?", said the helpful lady on the phone. Useful service, I thought - I can make sure that everything is ready for him. Took the morning off work...

Ignition lockout on Baxi HE 50 Plus

I'm planning to get my boiler serviced for the winter. It has very occasionally failed to light and locked out the ignition over the last few months. Should I be asking for a repair, or assuming that this can be dealt with by the servicing?
