    One for Westie

If there is no written permission I'm guessing they would have to move it without it costing me anything/as much as if there was written permission in the deeds for it to be there? Thanks for the info, interesting! :)

    Fault finding

Had a job today finding a fault causing RCD to trip. Located it down to outside lights. This is a big house and stables with lots of external lighting, bollards, pir's, photocells etc.. Started looking into various bits breaking it down, and then happened to notice one armoured cable going...

    One for Westie

How close to over head cables can a building be? We are thinking about this property, however we would need to put an extension on the gable end. As you can see there are overheads from the Tx which pass near by, and wondered what the regs are on this? Also the stay wires from the Tx poles...

    Ceiling fan hum

Hi.. Motors do hum during operation, and the hard surface of the ceiling acts to amplify that noise. All you can do is like you say try putting some rubber or something I between to try and absorb the sound. From what your describing sounds normal to me.

    4 pole contactor for oven.

From the pic it looks like the contractor is rated at 25A. What size fuse is on the circuit?. You could parallel up the live and neutral to share the load between the contacts, this will increase the life of the contactor. It is normal for them to run warm, just depends how warm yours is. Why...

    test a capacitor

Can you take a photo of the items which trip and post it here? Or if not can you see what markings are on it, it should say something like B20 or something similar. What is the rating of the motor?

    test a capacitor

Has it been ok on this supply? What is the rating of your 'fuse' it is tripping? Is it a fuse or a mcb? Motors take a large inrush current which will trip a B type mcb, if this is what is tripping. A C type may solve your problem, but certain checks need to be done first to make sure it is safe...

    test a capacitor

You need a multi meter which can measure capacitance. Most simple meters only go up to 100MF I believe. Is this a start cap from a single phase motor?

Any ideas? New CU keeps tipping.

So you changed the CU yourself then? Take some pictures of the inside for is please. You have the neutrals for those two circuits in the wrong neutral bar. 100A isolator a are readily available and your 63A one is likely to get hot and catch fire. It will not trip on overload. It's only a...

    twin & earth at sea

No, in vehicles boats etc flex is used as the movement of the vehicle can cause the connections of t&e to break off as it isn't flexible. T&e is for houses etc which don't move.
