Is this damp how do i prevent it?

I had similar in the bathroom ceiling of our last house. Bro (who knows more than you and me) came round and said "Sand it well then spray on some HG anti mould spray like Wickes sells and let it dry. Then repaint it of course. He was right the mould never came back.

Painting New Render - Can I do it now?

Don't worry about weather spoiling it, if it was done with the correct materials, it won't happen. At my last house the previous owner left it undecorated for over a year then I left it for another six months before painting it with Wickes own textured in the late spring. When I moved out 14...

    Glue for engineered V4 flooring

I would not use any glue at all. If you ever need to take the floor up for any reason you will be in trouble. I fitted engineered wood to my hall a few years ago with no glue (the supplier did not suggest doing so) and one does not glue laminate does one which is a similar idea. Actually a...

Ingress of water into boiler via flue

Seen this before at a neighbour's and a better gas man than yours soon fitted a hood he got from somewhere for about £70.

Does your car have a dipstick?

Interesting, when I next buy a new car, probably in a couple of years or so I will be lookng for a dipstick and will walk away if I can't see one.

    Useless window fitters

I would expect 20% off. You have to be so careful with window men because many of them are amateurs and I have seen similar lash ups to yours in the past. These days I always tell folk to choose a local firm which has been in business for at least 5 yrs or of course do it yourself (yes I have...

    leaking velux window

Yes, If I ever have roof windows done again they will definitely not be Velux - the rascals try to make out that theirs are the best NOT!

    leaking velux window

I have recently observed that Mr Velux has made some design alterations not so long ago where the rubber hits the road so to speak or rather where it hits the wood. Now why would he do that? I suspect that some of us know but getting retro repairs done after a few years will not be on their...

    Scotch broth in slow cooker

So this is my latest effort heartily approved by the family: 1 medium potato, 1 onion, 1 large carrot, 1 celery stick, 1/2 swede all chopped in the old moulinex chopper to the size you like. Three tablespoons of cornflour (or more if you like) mixed into a slurry in cold water and two oxo cubes...

Under stairs draws - Are they worth it?

After many years of DIY and property refurbishment I have a simple rule these days:- KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID - works every time and my rule would immediately reject any such arrangement.

    Are these quotes reasonable?

No it is not acceptable they are trying to rip you off, go elsewhere. I just paid a similar sum for a new boiler supplied and fitted which took them around 6 hours and they are the most skilled and highest paid tradesmen as we all know.

    Loft aerial upgrade

When I moved in around 5 yrs ago I immediately noticed dishes and some kind of Sky set up so I asked the guy why. Oh well we are over 25 miles to the transmitter and the reception is crap he replied. Undaunted I got a high gain aeriel from B & Q just over a metre long and bought another of my...

Bosch Self Cleaning Condenser Dryer needing clean

You would be amazed at just how much lint accumulates inside these machines over time. Around once a year in the summer I take ours outside unscrew the side panels and go all over it with our vacuum cleaner and a brush. This guy has some helpful videos I have watched :-...

    Front timber gate

I would defintely make my own but then I have an electric planer (about £50) and a small table saw ( about £100) - cuts straight lines. Oh and BTW make sure you use pressure treated timber so that it lasts a long time.

    Shower tray sealing

Alternatively, use Teleseal which I have used as a perfect non-mouldy, non-silicone seal on baths but yet to try it on a shower tray.

    Shower tray sealing

There is often a problem with mould accumulating on silicone sealants in my experience with just one exception - Forever White from Everbuild which in my experience seems to be totally mould proof.

Simplest way of fixing this washing machine waste bodge?

Every washing machine/dishwasher outlet I have ever seen is angled upwards to avoid such issues like this one form Wickes:-https://www.wickes.co.uk/McAlpine-WM11-Sink-P-Trap+Twin-Nozzles---38mm/p/226994

Got a lot of tree/bush removal to do.....

Have done similar jobs myself several times but never bothered with a shredder. As it happens I have a Skoda Estate and I can easily get one of those builders bags in the back so No.1 Son and I chop stuff as and if necesssary and pile it into said bag to take to the local tip. One one occasion I...

Installer insists on Combi with unvented cylinder

There are some real thickies out there I'm afraid who don't always know what they should. I had a so called expert insist on installing a vented HW tank in my loft a few years ago against my better judgement so I gave up and let him try. After a few days the tank arrived and he proceeded to try...
