I was going by this picture on page 5: I must admit, their installation manual tries to be so simplistic that it ends of creating confusion.

It looks like we have been using the terms "thermostat" and "base unit" to describe the same thing. The Nest documentation calls these thermostats the "base units". So we are on the same page.

Is it bad to wire a UK plug like this - ie with a certain length of bare wire showing before each screw terminal?

I have solved the problem. The main switch had been labeled incorrectly by the previous electrician. All three wires now in the correct positions. All lights now operating correctly. Thanks for the help.
