Mixed floor types within one room

Hi all, Getting two rooms knocked through into one, and an extension added, to make one large room (kitchen). It's a Victorian house. The two rooms that are being knocked into one have different floor constructions - the existing dining room has timber floorboards, and the kitchen has a solid...

    Devimat confusion

Update on this thread: Of course, it was nothing to do with the system needing to learn anything. Turns out the controllers are U/S. I rang the Danfoss helpline and they explained that the Devireg 550 is a very old controller, which tends to develop various "gremlins" until it eventually...

    Devimat confusion

Thanks for the responses so far. This is not a new installation, so I wouldn't expect that it would need to learn the heating characteristics of the room, I think? It was powered off when I moved in though, and I have changed the timer settings - would it need to re-learn after this? I will...

    Devimat confusion

Hi, I've just moved into a flat with Devimat heating and am confused about the settings / display. 1. Should the mat switch off as soon as it reaches the end of the "on" time? This morning, I noticed that the Devireg 550 controller in one of the rooms was showing the heating-up symbol about 40...

    Gripfill MDF skirting fixing

Not sure whether to put this in the carpentry or decorating forum. I am replacing some old timber skirtings with MDF. I am planning to fix with Gripfill only, as behind the skirtings is just dot & dab plasterboard, with no timber. I have one wall which isn't flat - slightly convex bend -...

    Sanding or lining paper?

Just coming back to this thread in case someone else has the same problem. Two things that helped me end up with a pretty good finish: 1. Bought a "heavy duty scraper" from Screwfix, which was much better at scraping off high / loose sections than the filling knife I was previously using...

    Electric shower replacement / upgrade?

Thanks for the replies so far. I've been back and investigated further. The current shower is 10.8kw, which seems to be close to the max available. At the time of the shower failure, I'd turned on the shower when the washing machine was running. Both of them run off the mains. I suspected...

    Electric shower replacement / upgrade?

Hi, I have an electric shower which seems to have failed, as it makes noises as though it is heating the water, but the water comes out completely cold. Failed suddenly - worked yesterday, not today. It's a Mira Go. I've been through the troubleshooting on the Mira page here, but still not...

Polycell Smooth flexible paint vs Polycell 3 in 1 Basecoat vs. Ronseal Triple Action basecoat

Got some very small imperfections that I want to cover. Peeled paint (all now scraped back as far as possible) and a couple of very slight ridges / divots. Has anyone used any of these three and can report back on which would work? Polycell Smooth flexible paint Polycell 3 in 1 Basecoat...

    Sanding or lining paper?

I've been reading up on this, and saw a suggestion to use a latex-based high-hiding primer. Would that work? Dulux do one called Glidden Ultra Interior Primer. Will that do the job of the "magic self-leveling ceiling paint" that I'm looking for? I've heard that papering a ceiling is a lot...

    Sanding or lining paper?

I've just stripped the lining paper off a ceiling as it was in poor condition. My question is - what's my best option to decorate the ceiling? Lining paper or fill & sand? The ceiling has a few long cracks but is otherwise quite level. It has two thin layers of paint, both of which are...

Underpinning - usual projection distance from wall?

Great, very informative post, thanks Ken. Good to know that it could be either flush with the wall or mass fill type with less precision. There is no portal for building control apps in England (unless I've missed something!), but I'll ring the local Building Control Officer and ask if there...

Underpinning - usual projection distance from wall?

Ah, ok, thanks Woody. I suspect this concrete may be protecting an old drain or something. I'll dig a bit further along and see what I uncover.

Underpinning - usual projection distance from wall?

Can anyone tell me how far, very roughly, the concrete generally projects from the face of an underpinned wall please? Been digging a small trial pit to expose the foundations of my neighbour's Victorian flank wall, as I need to build some new footings adjacent to this, and have exposed some...

    WC ball valve replacement

Success! (eventually!) Durhamplumber was right - it was a VERY tight fit! So tight that I had to remove the flush mechanism to remove the faulty inlet valve. But in order to remove the flush mechanism, the whole cistern had to come off the wall & pan, which involved sawing bolts with...

Exposed shower valve - 22mm inlets?

Success! OldBuild was right - the existing nuts are identical to those supplied with the new valve. :):) So no need for olive pullers or cutting. New valve is now on and working. Just need to "soak test" it for a couple of days to make sure no leaks. Thanks so much for the help guys.

    WC ball valve replacement

Next topic! I'm getting on with stuff today. :) Toilet flush: The cistern never really gets full and the valve never fully switches off. I've poked around and it seems that the bit that the ball float pushes into to stop the cistern filling is sticking. What's that called? Inlet valve...

Let's hope so! That was the problem I had with the first valve I bought.

Exposed shower valve - 22mm inlets?

I do have some pliers like those Old&Bold. I had a little go at what you suggested but didn't try too hard as I don't yet have a new valve, and I need to use the shower in the interim. I've ordered one of these: https://www.wayfair.co.uk/Hudson-Reed-Twin-Exposed-Shower-Valve-REQ1064.html...
