Advice for new boiler in 3rd floor flat - scaffolding really needed?

I’ve seen this done, they just push the old flue out from the inside so it crashes to the ground or maybe lands on someone’s head and have their assistant catch it.

Ah! That's interesting. I note it is double width.

    Lighting puzzle

Thanks for all your posts - I hope you enjoyed the mental exercise! Here are my (partial?) solutions: Firstly, of course it would be easy if there were a permanent live a the right switch. There isn't, but one or other of the red strappers will always be live. So if we had a DC supply, we could...

Can anyone identify the terminals on a Friedland 454 chime?

Is that what they mean, or “we cannot find the same kind of transformer for sale” ?

    What could this cable be?

It doesn't look like modern cable TV; is it Rediffusion? It could be useful to know where you live.

Can anyone identify the terminals on a Friedland 454 chime?

I think you could replace it with any 8V bell transformer.

    Lighting puzzle

Dear All, Please treat this as a logic puzzle for your enjoyment, not a call for assistance! Currently my living room lights are controlled by two switches in a conventional way as shown: The wires are singles in conduit. I'd like to add an additional light, separately switched. Clearly...

Central heating through joists, Plastic or 30 soldered copper joints?

Short answer, yes it is. Is it really? in any case, that’s only at a couple of fittings, not along the whole length of the pipe. It would be fine.

Picture lights and ceiling track lights

With the wire behind the insulation, I’d need to make a hole in the plasterboard and the poke through the insulation and then start fishing. I fear it would not work well, and I’d end up making more and more holes that would need patching up.

Waste pipes under bathroom floor that will be tiled

Certainly not push fit - or “pull apart” as I prefer to call it. I once managed to pull apart a below-floor waste fitting under a bathroom pedestal basin while trying to clean, and discovered what I’d done when I found water coming out of the downstairs ceiling light fitting.

Picture lights and ceiling track lights

Chasing the ceiling to numerous spots is unappealing; chasing to one or two track light connections would be more practical. But I am told that tracks lights are unfashionable. Do people agree/disagree with that?

Picture lights and ceiling track lights

Yes. Mostly not a problem as the cables can be > 50 mm deep.

House to flats outdoor space questions

I think you would need to extend “emergency” to “only as required for repairs and maintenance, with reasonable notice (except in an emergency)”. Probably not.

    why was my concrete "rocky"?

Yes. You might be able to add a load of sand, but that doesn’t make the big stones any smaller.

What did you learn on your courses, about notices and related subjects?

Picture lights and ceiling track lights

Not an option, it’s a flat and I can’t dig holes of that size in the ceiling.

Picture lights and ceiling track lights

They look like lights hung from wires; do you prefer them to tracks? I don’t think I do!
