Welsh roof slates flaking / delamination - are these bad?

OK, thanks for explaining. I think I've got it now. I read a while back that once you know, you know. And I think I know! Rattling slates are obvious. Dull I'm not certain but I think it's when they just thud and sound lifeless. Ringing is when they subtly vibrate in your hand and ring...

Welsh roof slates flaking / delamination - are these bad?

Excellent. I've weeded out all the slates that rattle or thud. Of the ones I've kept to re-use, some certainly ring more than others, but I wondered if that has something to do with the thickness of the slate and/or anything else? Some ring high, so low, etc. But basically if it rings and...

Welsh roof slates flaking / delamination - are these bad?

Now that I understand more about roofing, that's exactly what I thought too! It was done well before we moved here, and I don't know by whom. Shame. I'd be more than happy with 30 years! In terms of maintenance, what kinds of things do you mean? Do others agree that they might last...

Welsh roof slates flaking / delamination - are these bad?

Hi all Whilst doing some repairs on my roof - which required removing some slates - I've noticed that a lot of them were wet on the underside. They are also flaking, a bit on the underside, but more on the upper section of the topside (the sections covered by the slates above). I'll attach...

Hot Dipped vs Zinc Coated Galvanised Nails - which for roofing?

Sounds nasty! So aside from the unpleasant working conditions and risks, I can't see any disadvantage to hot dipped. And therefore also can't see why people choose to use (and roofing stores choose to sell) the far inferior electro zinc coated for roofing jobs...

Hot Dipped vs Zinc Coated Galvanised Nails - which for roofing?

I guess I hadn't thought to. I'll see what I can find. Thanks for the tip.

Hot Dipped vs Zinc Coated Galvanised Nails - which for roofing?

I'm not sure if I'm overthinking this... I was under the impression hot dipped galvanised is far superior, and best for any outdoor use... I need to do some roof repairs and bought a pack of round wire nails made by Samac, for fixing sarking boards and battens to rafters. The Samac nails...

Roof repair - can I use torch-on felt nailed only, as underlay (instead of 1f)?

Excellent, thanks for the response. Which of the two would you use? The thinner underlay as per the link, or the one I took a photo of, which is much thicker and I presume a top felt?

Roof repair - can I use torch-on felt nailed only, as underlay (instead of 1f)?

Hi all Hoping to do this repair at the weekend, so any thoughts as to whether I can use either of these torch on felts as a substitute for 1f (and use it in the same way as 1f - i.e. nail it only) would be a great help... Ta

Roof repair - can I use torch-on felt nailed only, as underlay (instead of 1f)?

Hi I've got a repair to do to my roof. The roof has sarking boards, with 1f felt on top, battens, then slates. I'm repairing a hole in the sarking and felt from where a flue was removed. The whole area to be repaired amounts to approx. 1.2m x 1m. I was kindly given some felt to use for...

Voids under stone wall (no foundations) - can I fill them and with what if so?

Hi Been away for a few days, but hoping to do this tomorrow/Friday. Just got a couple more questions if you don't mind. Can I just pack the mortar in against the compacted soil? Or do I need to do something to the soil prior to using the mortar? And is it best to work when the compacted...

Reclaimed Welsh Slates - Can you re-use them if they have four holes?

Thank you both :) So that's a score draw so far then... Anyone else want to chip in? Cheers

Reclaimed Welsh Slates - Can you re-use them if they have four holes?

Hi all I bought some 24x14 slates for a repair. They mostly already have four holes. Are they still ok to re-use? I know I have to make new holes when fitting them. Just to add, the new holes will be lower as they're going on a roof with 20x12s. I'm just using these at the abutment...

Voids under stone wall (no foundations) - can I fill them and with what if so?

OK, thanks. How about using NHL3.5 to allow for a bit of breathability and so that it would hopefully move and flex with any wall movements over the seasons and years?

Voids under stone wall (no foundations) - can I fill them and with what if so?

Thank you both for explaining. Can you see any disadvantages to using lime (NHL 5?) instead of concrete. It's just that the rest of the wall has been pointed and built in lime, so it would be consistent with that. And would be more breathable than concrete. Any downsides to using it...

Voids under stone wall (no foundations) - can I fill them and with what if so?

Many thanks for the reply. What would be the reason/advantage in using a dry mix? Yes, I do have some stone. Would you do it so that the front of the stones are: - Not visible. "Buried" by the concrete so all you can see is concrete at the front (or limecrete if I use that)? - Visible...

Voids under stone wall (no foundations) - can I fill them and with what if so?

Hi We had the roughcast render hacked off the stone wall of our house, and the pointing replaced with lime mortar. There are no foundations. At the time, I pulled back the gravel at the footings of the wall, creating a bit of a trench. There's hard compacted soil beneath the bottom stones...

Angle Grinder - Wattage, Button/Trigger, and Recommendations?

Hi @Mike13 Thanks for the link. I had this same problem (and fell into the same trap!) when looking for discs for a smaller angle grinder.... The thickness in this case refers to the thickness of the diamond segment, i.e. as you look at the diamond segment in the Toolstation photo it is 10mm...

Angle Grinder - Wattage, Button/Trigger, and Recommendations?

A little off topic from my original questions, but does anyone know what the thickest diamond disc would be for 9"/230mm angle grinder? I've not found anything thicker than 2.5mm so far. At sensible prices, the thickest I've found for all sizes are: - 4 1/2" 115mm = 8mm thick - 5" / 125mm...
