    Lock offs for unenergised cable

Once paid the cable belongs to the customer. However until the other upgrade works are carried out, I am not happy Connecting it to the existing installation. If the customer decides that they are going to connect it themselves, then I have done everything I can do my end

    Lock offs for unenergised cable

Both good ideas. I did think actually of hiding a short on the cable somewhere, with the idea being if he does it himself it will catch him out and if anyone else does it, then they should be testing the cable first anyway

    Lock offs for unenergised cable

That’s a good idea. I could tag it as well then. Obvious really!

    Lock offs for unenergised cable

Does anyone know of a product that exists to ‘lock off’ a cable that has not been energised So I am about to complete installing submain and associated wiring to workshop and garage building. Submain installed bit won’t be terminated at the supply end just yet as the site is waiting on supply...

    Opinions please

None of it has been done reasonably, all of it done by themselves or a handyman/gardener they used to employ I have already replaced their home made unvented cylinder!

    Opinions please

Okay got an interesting one on the go and I think I know the answer but just wanting to see what others would do Been tasked with wiring up a garden room/office, fair size (probably needs planning but doesn’t have it) electric heating, led lights, possibly electric water heating, ive sized the...

    Wiring in tub

Not sure why you’re asking then, as you seem to know it all already!

    Connecting to mains electricity costs

unless it’s a private road, generally no need for a wayleave for cables etc in verges. Would need permits etc, but that would be factored into your quote. not sure on how sse work, but where I am, in a WPD area they generally don’t do new connections overhead. In fact I had the options for...

    Connecting to mains electricity costs

Whilst it can be potential for bargaining, most likely all that would happen is they would exercise their legal rights, they may remove the cable feeding the neighbour from yours at their expense. Even if you turned around and said you wanted their equipment removed immediately there is a...

    Connecting to mains electricity costs

Last year had a new three phase supply put in on a job. We excavated to the boundary. Existing main in footpath was 0.06 pilc (around 35mm) so unsuitable for the new connection. Western Power laid 60metres of 185mm cable alongside it and jointed to a larger cable. Initial quote was around £13k...

    Boiler issue after power cut

given that the hot water works, I’d say have a look at the thermostat. Is the one where the receiver is integral to the boiler

    Boiler issue after power cut

I seem to remember this happening on a job of mine after a power interruption. 026 is a fault with the pairing for the room thermostat. Do you have a wireless room stat?

    Switch next to sink

Too much of this work creation going on via EICRs since the law changed requiring them. I have people telling me I can’t perform an EICR without being accredited (total ballcocks) and other customer asking me to look over their EICR as they have been quoted more to rectify a few issues than it...

    Switch next to sink

i would go back to the electrician and ask him to provide some back up for his codings. I assume he is quoting for the ‘remedial’ work

    Switch next to sink

There are a lot of points quoted there that shouldn’t be. The provision of smoke and heat alarms is a building reg not a wiring one, so that shouldn’t be even coded. Think the person issuing the report is fishing for some work

    Switch next to sink

Good point, however I was taught to reference a relevant regulation and record that next to the code when writing out the report

    Switch next to sink

What regulation is quoted for the ‘failure’. There are no quoted distances in the wiring regulations! Best practice is 300mm minimum but I have fitted them less than that before, sometimes there isn’t another option.

    2 cut-out fuses

This was a massive one, took a 60a three phase supply, the customer was keen to keep hold of it as she had spent a lot of money having the bricks replaced about 6 years ago. There is still at least one company around that works on them still

    2 cut-out fuses

yes these would all be ones offs in the village, though there is a small development nearby (10 houses built late 80s) with no gas and three phase supplies To each for electric heating. Most now have switched to oil or lpg

    2 cut-out fuses

I think quote often a lot of houses had storage heating retrofitting and so would have to suit the heating load to the available supply. Whereas these houses were built with it I do know of a customer who had to have a three phase supply installed to serve a GEC night store 100! (Basically a...
