    Pop-up waste query.

Hi guys Would somebody kindly confirm the purpose of the small rubber washer on the pop-up waste pushrod, please. Should it be tucked down inside the body of the tap to reduce any lateral movement of the rod? Thanks for any help. :)

    Brake Caliper Pins

I always thought the red grease was specifically for rubber items. Could you not use ceramic brake grease, lithium grease or even copaslip?

Too late, I've already downloaded them.

Don’t let your door blow open!

Guys, deviating slightly from the thread subject there is a very watchable video on YouTube of an impressive Citroen CX25 Gti turbo in pristine condition. The presenter, Ian Tyrrell, is an engineer who mainly restores classic Italian sports cars but the sight of the Citroen in his garage...

    Removing an oxygen sensor

No, John, the damn thing was stolen a few weeks back – yes, that’s right they’re even the hitting 18 year Yaris/s now. I was completely bemused upon discovery but subsequent browsing of the interweb seems to show that the precious metals in the cat can exist in the earlier designs in sometimes...

    Removing an oxygen sensor

Yes, you’re quite right, John, it was the original Toyota exhaust as was, of course, the catalyst. Anyway, the replacement Klarius catalyst/exhaust is now fitted (with the original sensors) but it is still not without probs. The car starts fine but the inevitable engine light remains on...

Very old front loading washing machine still performs but...

Excellent find, Johnny, I think I’ll send for those. :) For the moment, weirdly, the leak seems to have stopped. If the replacements from simplybearings seal properly then job done, if there remains a small leak then that is not a problem as the machine is currently raised on two blocks of 4 x4...

I have a couple of sets of o-rings but they do not have anything remotely similar to what is required. Don’t forget it is a square-section type. Incidentally it has (approx) OD: 70mm, ID: 60mm.

Very old front loading washing machine still performs but...

Yes, so I have read. I rather doubt that any Whirlpool machine unboxed today will still be functioning in 2060. That said neither, presumably, will quite a few of us. :) Well ultimately I guess you could fix the cover back in with silicone sealant but you would lose the clearing-out...

Very old front loading washing machine still performs but...

sircerebus666: As far as I understand Phillips left the electric appliance business several years ago. Am I incorrect here? I have tried quite a few of the online WM spares retailers but their systems consistently fail to even recognise the model number. No, I have yet to try using a couple of...

Very old front loading washing machine still performs but...

A few years ago I passed on old washing machine to a young relative expecting that it might be something she could use for a year or two before it finally exited this world. I was astonished to find out a day or so ago that the bloody thing is still functioning – I actually purchased it in 1982...

    Removing an oxygen sensor

Very grateful for this advice, John, and will carry this out in due course. :) Meanwhile I have had further problems with trying to separate the back-box section from the mid-section. I thought I could unscrew the bolts using wheel wrench etc but ended up sawing through the bolts. Am I...

    Removing an oxygen sensor

Guys, I still have a couple of questions that I would like your advice on. The crush washers turned up today but they are quite different from the washer (seemingly captive as it does not unscrew from the thread). 1) There never was any washer on the sensor between the manifold and catalyst...

    Removing an oxygen sensor

Well given that there appears to be a week or so delay with getting stuff from the bay I ventured out yesterday to our (seemingly) one sole motor factor – Halfords. Absolutely buġġer all cbg, though be reassured, they have around 12 varieties of car wash soap and 28 different types of body...

    Be careful!

That is such deadful news. The poor guy. Doesn't it just put things into perspective, though, making our own issues utterly trivial by comparison. Condolences to his family.

    Battery Ratchets?.

Fair enough for the occasional wrencher, conny, but no doubt Keith, John, Mottie and the rest of the cognoscenti occasionally can get a socket over a bolt but not have room to turn the wrench. A simple press of the button just works so ultimately a potential time-saver. It does look smart...

    Removing an oxygen sensor

Well with a combination of the 12" adjustables and with the basin spanner on the end plus some liberal use with the angle-grinder I managed to get them out. The exhaust sensor (the one below in photo) took about an hour and the one twixt manifold and catalyst a piffling 20 minutes. So thanks for...

    Removing an oxygen sensor

John: Yes, I obtained a stouter shorter sensor socket as I was told the longer type do open slightly when subjected to a lot of torque but actually that very thing is happening here, so it is trying to round the edges. The largest adjustable I have is 12" but even with a tubular basin spanner...

    Removing an oxygen sensor

I am trying to extract this oxygen sensor so that it can be used again in a replacement exhaust. There are many examples on YouTube of folk doing this but just about in all cases, contrary to my objective, they are attempting to replace a new sensor into an existing exhaust. So far I have...
