Water hammer / noise on hot water system fill

OK - some clarity. There are two feeder tanks in the loft, the one I changed with a new ball valve, and another which looks much older (covered in cobwebs) but still appears to work. It is covered with an insulation cover. I cannot figure out where it goes to but it is the one that is making...

Water hammer / noise on hot water system fill

I previously posted that I thought I was getting water hammer when the header tank in the loft was being filled. I suggested I replaced the float in the tank but the problem did not go away. A plumber suggested that I install a shock arrestor which I did to the pipe which feeds the tank...

Extending a hybrid radial ring circuit

Hi there, I am about to fit a solid wood floor and once its down it ain't coming back up! So before I do, I wanted some thoughts on extending a hybrid ring circuit. During some renovation work, I found a single 5 or 6mm twisted cable feeding two sockets and wall lights in a bedroom. There was...

    Doorbell transformer for Nest/Ring

If you are after the Ring plugin transformer, go direct to them. I am about to order one for a Ring Doorbell Pro and they're only £15.

Filling the header tank makes a foghorn noise

Did some research and I am thinking of fitting a PEGLER PEG62 WATER HAMMER ARRESTOR to the vertical pipe on the right of the image. I might even take the opportunity to fit some pipe clips!

Filling the header tank makes a foghorn noise

Hi all - months on and the noise has not gone away and with recent changes to my central heating system (new rads), every time the tank starts to fill the hammer starts. Examples are if I lock off a rad, drain and then refill or even something as simple as cleaning out the magna clean...

Cutting the back out of a Howdens Microwave Tower Unit

Scrub that - I can see with some prodding that the backing is fairly flimsy - not chip board.

Cutting the back out of a Howdens Microwave Tower Unit

Our microwave has broken and we're having trouble finding a replacement. Do you know if the back on the microwave tower units form Howdens are load-bearing? I might need to cut a hole in the back to get a microwave to fit but didn't know if I would run through screws/bolts etc? I'm literally...

There's no joist in the corner of the room

Finally got to grips with this. I looked at the perpendicular supports and it was not making sense to me as the plinth below it was not as uniform as I would have hoped. So I created a frame and coach screwed that together, aside from those sections that ran parallel to the notched joist (just...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

This makes perfect sense, I could see me making a right mess trying to ensure that there was cement above and below it, and I doubt I'd get much in the edges. Thanks!

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

Ummmm....YEAH! Unfortunately I don't have any slate apart from the blue garden variety. Was thinking of trying the local reclamation yard for "bits".

There's no joist in the corner of the room

About to fit the additional joist and wondered what the risk to the subfloor would be if I just used a parallel joist alone, attached to the one that has been cut out but along its entire length? By the time the skirting goes down there would be around 15cm unsupported in the corner. It has 22mm...

I'll hunt around my garden for old tiles...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

Got the lintel in yesterday. I think it went ok! I seemed to take longer mixing the bloody mortar than fitting it... It will always look a bloody mess with the black mortar knocking about and I am not sure how crazy I want to go with repointing. As full-length bricks needed to come out I didn't...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

I'm toying with the idea of getting a readymix but knowing I have to get to 250mm deep - I need a fair bit. We have yet to find the raised hearth so know that the 250mm will be reduced but understand the total thickness needs to be 250mm. The floor is suspended generally in the room but at...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

So now my question is do I tackle the lintel myself? We have a quote to fit the new fire and it's mounting up. £120.00 for the lintel? Then there's the need for a constructional hearth. I found this great thread which set me up nicely - not sure if I need to notify a building control body? I'll...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

We've seen a burner we are going to buy so will get the firm to do the whole shooting match, including sweeping our other chimney while they are at it.

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

Yep. Will go the liner route.

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

Oh forgot to mention! We're planning on a reclaimed yorkstone for the hearth. We're resigned to killing the carpet so would probably rip the current boards up - maybe even concrete underneath / insulate but as I mentioned, this room is getting expensive! We know there is ventilation in another...

Apparently the chimney has been blocked off...

The flue picture is from the ground floor, taken by pointing my phone in selfie mode upwards. There's no access to the flue from the first floor - the walls are wallpapered and we have no intention of disturbing this room at the moment. Hopefully, the last picture shows things a little cleaner...
