    scaffolding required?

I will add I've agreed a price already with the window firm and taken out finance with them for this price. The price agreed was very good, almost too good to be true, but they're a national firm so I trust they'll do a good job (and if not I'll be on their case).

    scaffolding required?

We're having a few new windows fitted. One is above a porch. Having done a survey the window company has come back and said they need scaffolding around the porch. Is this the case? They want another £130 for this (they told me the scaff will cost them £300 so they're doing me a favour???)...

    Drain problem. Home insurance?

Thanks for all your replies, WRT the gulley, I want to clarify there was no way on earth that anybody could have taken the concrete out from around it without disturbing it. The clay gulley was set 3 inches below the concrete surface with the concrete edge chamfered smooth info the gulley. In...

    Drain problem. Home insurance?

Negligence? If you mean the fact that the leak happened at all, it was leaking when we bought the house. If you mean by me digging the problem up, I've made situation no worse. I've improved it but I recognise further work is required. When was it ever normal to bury drains in concrete? 1955...

    Drain problem. Home insurance?

I've had a leaky soil stack for quite a while. We couldn't see the leak, it was just under the concrete patio. We knew it was there because about 6ft from the soil stack is a water meter chamber which was always full of water. I excavated this last year to renew the water main and the whole hole...

    Adjusting French doors

I need to lift a pair of French doors in their frame by about 4-5mm as they have dropped since being fitted last year causing the bottom seals to pull off when operated. The hinges appear to sit in metal tracks on the frame. Am I right in thinking if I tighten the Back nut on the top of the...

    Rainwater storage

I'm going to be placing an IBC tank in my garden, raised up so the top is at 1800mm so I can place a 6ft fence around it. Will this head be sufficient to run a hosepipe (for watering plants) by gravity alone? Or should I use a pump and leave it at ground level? What pump? The tank is going to...

    Floor load

I have actual walls built on the middle of the floor upstairs in my house. Theyve been there since the 1950s. And not going anywhere soon! They must weigh a fair bit! I saw a fish tank for sale recently which held 900 litres of water. The water alone in that will weigh 900kg. I hope they send...

    Pipes in concrete floor

I bought a 1950s house two years ago. When the floor covering was removed, it was revealed the central heating pipes were in concrete in several locations. And a gas pipe. When they were removed all were badly corroded. There was a mild smell of gas, suspect it was leaking under the concrete...

    To kill a gas pipe

I had a similar job a couple years ago. Bought a house that needed full rip out. GSR came in, ten minute job to remove the gas meter, completely isolating the house. Didnt charge me because he had the job to fit the new system when I had finish ripping the old system out.

Replacing Window handles with keyless ones?

My mum had upvc windoze fitted in about 1990 with these handles! Push to lock, key popped the button so you could turn handle.

    Is this fitted right?

French doors fitted in October. Worked fine until a week or so ago. Now the rubber seal on both doors catches the bottom plate. The strike plate appears to be mounted at an angle to horizontal. Is this right? It is the protruding edge of this plate that catches the door seals. The top plate is...

    Building my own shed

I just meant I'd only need one gutter instead of two ;)

    Building my own shed

The electrics will be done by an electrician. He is already aware of my intention and left a spare MCB in the consumer unit he fitted last year. 16ft is about 5 metres? 10ft is 3m, so inadvertently I'm actually building a 15sqm shed, on the limit. I might take your advice on the flat roof...

    Building my own shed

Looks good. That looks more leisure than what I'm planning. I'm after more of a functional shed. It's going to have a single upvc or wooden door and a single window. I think for a start I might skip the insulation and internal finish and do that at a later date as and when I can afford it. I...

    Building my own shed

Hi, so I'm going to be building my own shed. I'm planning it now. I recently went down to a shed place local to me, thinking "how bad can they be?" Well, if I want a shed made of balsa wood I know where to go. So anyway, this shed I'm planning. It's going to be approx 16ft x 10ft with the side...

    Pond Lining Problem

Hard water shouldn't affect it unless you're constantly topping it up. You could buy a water testing kit fairly cheaply and see if there's high levels of anything in the water. They give a good indication of any problems in your pond.

    Pond Lining Problem

During the flood of 2007 in South Yorkshire, our pond was overcome with water. Some of the fish were found 3 doors down swimming around the garden. They were only smallish goldfish. Anyway a few months later, only one fish survived and we decided to bucket it, drain the whole pond, get in and...

    Painting cot

wow, its been a while since I asked this. I'm getting in the garden to spray this cot next week with the nice weather, and looking for paints. Would this one be ok? http://www.leylandtrade.com/products/product-detail/acrylic-eggshell.aspx I'm going to get a rather large pot of it as I want to...
