How to secure bolt for folding step ladder?

That's great, thanks a lot for that @JohnD :) Yep I've got washers already inbetween the wooden pieces. I've found some carriage bolts here that should fit what you suggest.

How to secure bolt for folding step ladder?

After stripping back an old step ladder it now needs to be reassembled. During the disassembly the bolts allowing the ladder to fold had to be cut off due to the one shot nature of their design. The inwards facing bolt ends were basically riveted over? I've got some threaded bolts which fit...

What are these screws used in an old step ladder?

Okay, you've talked me into it! :)

What are these screws used in an old step ladder?

The originals are 40mm so I think I should keep around that size. The oak has come up really well, but is showing a few signs of splits. So I'd like to keep as much material as possible and not tempt fate going deeper and things possibly splitting.

    Righto, replacements it is then!

What are these screws used in an old step ladder?

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Yes, I'd say the wood was oak, it's a good point because the previous screws rusting have definitely tainted the wood. I'm minded to replace them really, these look suitable. The only question mark is if the use of the twist nail is for any sort of...

What are these screws used in an old step ladder?

@JohnD That's interesting. By slot do you mean the holes? Checking the insides, there doesn't seem to be any ridges at all. @Burnerman Ahh ok good to put a name to them. They did initially strike me as completely ineffective when I extracted them.

What are these screws used in an old step ladder?

I'm fixing a broken folding step ladder and am coming to the point where I'm reassembling it. Looking at the screws that were used, the ones that were used to secure the step planks are of a type I'm unfamilar with. They are pan washer heads with a thread which looks extremely ineffective...

Pillar Drill vice with mounting holes 105mm apart?

Thanks for the reply conny. No, I’ve not got a vice yet. I may yet have to buy one and bodge together some kind of adaptor but tbh I’d really rather spend my time more productively diy’ing elsewhere! ;) I’ve heard of a few pillar drills with the same 105mm mounting hole distances as mine, so...

Pillar Drill vice with mounting holes 105mm apart?

Basically as per the thread title. Can anyone point me in the direction of a Pillar drill vice that has this mounting hole distance? Mounting holes seem to have become non standard, given the variety of cheaper less powerful drills now available. My mounting slots center points are 105mm apart...

Help me identify this wood veneer? Stain advice too.

Thanks for the replies everyone. @Ryler I think that's a good spot! Afromosia is very expensive though, even in veneer form! Think it's a protected species now which would account for the price. I'll probably need to go down a different route and take the drawer (once the current climate...

Removing a cotter (split) pin from an old vice?

Done! :) As @conny suggested, I managed to get a Dremel disc in there to cut it, then punched it through. Given it a quick going over with a wire disc drill bit, but think I'll need some small wire brushes to clean the inside as it's pretty gunky there.

Help me identify this wood veneer? Stain advice too.

A few years ago my brother-in-law threw out a drawer that belonged to my grandmother's dressing table and which was given to my girlfriend. She and I were livid! Anyway, enough said about that the better! I've been meaning to attempt to make a new drawer for her. It had two and I have the other...

Removing a cotter (split) pin from an old vice?

I don't have the battery and items to hand for the soda crystal method unfortunately. I was thinking of using baking soda or citric acid and 'lightly' going over with a metal brush? Once I'm done, does anyone know what the recommended grease to use on the thread is?

Removing a cotter (split) pin from an old vice?

Thanks for all the replies everyone. :) Here you go @JohnD I think it's a DRGM? I thought the end stock might be removable but it looks like it's welded in place?

Removing a cotter (split) pin from an old vice?

Bit of a difficult question to fit a thread. Here kind of makes sense since it's about a vice? I'd like to dismantle my grandad's old vice and give it a good clean and lubrication. However, taking it apart seems to hinge on removing this cotter (I seem to remember them being called split?) pin...

    Cost effective solder fume extractor?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'd not realised Mr Ward had done a tutorial for one. His stuff is always great. It's a nice project but one for the future really. As mattylad says, it is rather big but it's also quite expensive when everything is added up! I might give it a go though at some...

    Cost effective solder fume extractor?

This is kinda electric related, hope it's ok to post this question here. Can anyone suggest any reasonably priced solder fume extractors? For hobby soldering purposes. Say around the £20-£30 mark? Looking around, they seem to be fairly expensive for what they are. Imo at least, £50+ and way...

Which holes to use to attach pillar drill to bench?

Thanks again for all the replies. Yep it's only a cheapo drill, but I'm really chuffed about getting one finally. Always wanted one and it will allow me to do so much more stuff accurately. :)
