    non contact voltage detector recomendations

Yes, well I've still managed to need to do that twice in the last year, once when adding an additional socket onto a ring by splicing in the ceiling void and running a loop down the wall. Once when adding an additional downlight into an existing lighting run. Now, in both cases I could be...

    Timer module for in-line fan

Yeh, I'm beginning to think, that for the additional complexity it creates, it is not worth the saving it creates vs just getting two duct fans.

    non contact voltage detector recomendations

Granted, but that does not 'prove' a circuit is dead. Some cowboy might have wired something through from another building/supply. I'd still use my tester before cutting.

    Timer module for in-line fan

OK so you have chosen that route. The key word was 'cheap'. I did Google this before posting, but found links to products in the £50 price range, which is more expensive for a timer than some complete timed fan units. For the benefit of future forum users I have located this, which will do...

    Timer module for in-line fan

I'd like to replace two separate ceiling mounted extractor fans in adjacent rooms with a single in-line fan in the loft. I'd like it to be timer operated from either light-switch (in parallel), however most of the in-line fan units seem not to have a built in timer. Anyone know of a cheap...

    non contact voltage detector recomendations

How does one reliably 'prove' a circuit is dead then when you do not have confirmed access to the conductors (i.e. cutting into a cable run in a roof-space)? I will agree you should spend money on a decent one - also understand the exact method of operation of your specific tester. I have a...

Best wood finish for bathroom counter

So this is going to sound like a stupid question, but other than staining a front door once I haven't really worked with putting high quality finishes on wood! How do you know when you have sanded enough between coats? Are you just looking for smooth to the touch? Do you wipe down with water...

Best wood finish for bathroom counter

Thanks. I am also interested in what you mean by a primer coat? Using the same product? The Junckers stuff looks like a great product, just a shame the smallest size is 5L!

    Retrofit 2nd RCD

Yes I see what you mean. Should be no problem getting two 16mm2 cables into the main switch but getting the bus bar link out of the bottom of the main switch is going to be the challenge.

    Retrofit 2nd RCD

It follows on from my post about the metal stud work the other day. You can pick up the Memshield 2 80A/30mA RCD modules for about £15 so it seems minimal outlay for peace of mind.

    Retrofit 2nd RCD

That’s what I thought, 4 is overkill. So there is no silly rule like there can only be one radial ‘circuit’ per MCB or anything like that?

    Retrofit 2nd RCD

Oh and before anyone comments- the supply was off that the main isolator in the meter cupboard when that photo was taken!

    Retrofit 2nd RCD

this is my current CU layout It’s split load with the RCD protecting the three high amp MCBs on the right. On the non-RCD side there are 4 lighting circuits, plus one for burglar alarm and one for boiler. If I wanted to RCD protect the left side of this would it be within regs to wire two of...

Best wood finish for bathroom counter

Thanks! I was wondering if there are any modern clear polymer/plastic based finishes that will completely remove the problem of water marking?

Best wood finish for bathroom counter

Can someone recommend the best finish for a piece to walnut that is going to be used as a bathroom counter top. Ideally something that will both protect the wood but also avoid ring-marks/staining if wet objects or splashes get on the surface. Thanks!

Is metal stud-work required to be earthed?

Good point. I'll just wave my non-contact detector pen over the studs and rest easy. :)

Is metal stud-work required to be earthed?

Well quite, and I doubt there is any specific measure of that for regulations. House was wired to 16th Ed. in 2002 and has RCD protected sockets, but the lighting circuits are not and run freely through these studs without protection. I think I might get a CU replacement for peace of mind. Am...

Is metal stud-work required to be earthed?

Would you consider cables running through these kinds of punch-out without a grommet to be 'protected'?

Is metal stud-work required to be earthed?

Often wondered this. My current house is metal-framed throughout and I can find no evidence that the studs are earthed in any way. While they are not in themselves 'exposed' metalwork, the studs are often deliberately screwed in to for securing heavy wall items. There are a lot of cables...

Bosch, Neff, Siemens - any difference in reliability?

Thing is with all this stuff, including BMWs in my experience, is that the one person who gets a lemon will post about it non-stop, while the 100s of happy customers will never type a single word. It creates a very biased online view of most brands. You always remember the bad stuff more than...
