    Quote for trench

Ok got the quote down to £1500 but without the tarmac repair. He will make to all good and prepare the tarmac 'hole/trench' which is 16m long 400mm wide and about 75mm deep. He said he can get it filled for £1200 does this sound right? Its about 1/2 tonne for the tarmac and will probably take 2...

    running new supply pipe

Im running a new supply pipe about 150m from the meter to my house. The first few meter's INTO the house was replaced in 25mm MDPE a few years ago. I'm going to run 32mm MDPE the whole way and will need to connect it to the 25mm using either a standard reducer (32-25) or if I can find it, a...

    Quote for trench

Just got a quote in to dig a 150m trench 800mm deep. including within 2m of 3 mature trees and tarmac repair over about 8m. £6750++ was thinking man and a digger £200 a day plus £100 for som tarmac. Tops £1500 for the job, not £8100. Am I in sky cuckoo land???

    Conduit for utilities

So I need to run a new water main 300m from the road to the house. I may in the future look to get planning on a new build up the same lane and as it’s a fairly big job to trench 300 metres I’m thinking of future proofing the job and running it inside a 100mm pipe. That way I can add another...

    Cheap rads

About to start a refurb on my brothers new house. He's on a tight budget and I need to replace all the rads that have rusted out. Are these "cheap" rads worth it. They come with a 10 year guarantee but not sure if it's worth paying a bit extra? Example of what I'm looking at...

Filling a drainage ditch with gravel

I have a drainage ditch running along the back of my garden. It often fills with water to it's 4- 5foot depth but rarely/never overflows. I am resurfacing my large driveway which is currently pea gravel. I estimate I will have 20-30 tonnes to dispose of. I am thinking I can chuck it all in the...

    Feeling ripped off

UPDATE: I took the guy to small claims and won the case. However Ive got no chance of getting the money as ill have to pay for bailiffs and judging by my research they have limited powers to retrieve the monies. (good money after bad?!) I did get £300 from my insurance so I'm happy with that...

    Oak Beam Loading

As a rough guess can anyone point me in the right direction here, i am looking to span about 4m with a 200x100 oak beam. above will be a balcony. (with 6x2 joists softwood 1.2m long at 500 centres). I can't find a span table for this size beam anywhere. it will have 100mm support either end...

    Best wood for shelf

Not really no i would span max 60cm with 18mm MDF maybe 75cm with 25mm. Unless you get stupidly thick shelving 2m is too wide without support, or as suggested above a floating shelf but more expensive. Above is one I built a few years ago.

    Best wood for shelf

Thats a very think shelf. I would use 18mm MDF, cheap and easy to paint. 10 ft would need some support though.

    Feeling ripped off

Yep I did no joy there. I spoke to Citizens advice and they advised me he could be in breach of the consumer rights act 2015 under the 'reasonable price' clause. Basically says that if no price was agreed then any goods/service has to be of reasonable price. so ill get some quotes and compare...

    Feeling ripped off

Just returned form being away to see its fitted a basic ERA barrel that cost less than £10 and charged me £220 for. Bloody thing it the wrong colour as well. I called to say ill return it for a refund and he said once fitted can't be refunded! Not sure if i can argue not fit for purpose based on...
