Painting sash windows: am I doing the right thing

I know there are lots of threads about this, but I just wanted to check I am doing the right thing. I am painting a sash window inside and out. It was in ok condition, but with some sections with cracked and peeling paint (plus the previous owners had painted it shut, it being the kitchen...

    slow filling cistern

Back again and finally getting around to fixing the problem, thanks for the responses but I have a couple more questions. I have taken it apart and the plastic pin isn't catching, it moves freely. What appears to happen is that once the toilet is flushed, the pin doesn't pop fully out as (I...

    repointing this garden wall

unfortunately while somes bits are ok, there are masses of holes and crevices which are harbouring lots of snails which are eating my (expensive) plants despite my daily killing sprees. Hopefully filling the main ones should stop this

    repointing this garden wall

Hi, I have a small external garden wall above a raised flower bed that I want to repoint as it is full of larges cracks and crevaces that spew forth an unending supply of snails that are eating all my plants. I am not massively worried about finish or matching the colour (although obviously I...

    slow filling cistern

Hi, I know there are a lot of threads for this, but none seem to answer my question. Anyhow, just moved into a place and the cistern is very slow filling (10-15 mins). However, I have notice that where the water comes in on the right of the picture (up a hole, through a small horizontal...

Help for basement bathroom: inherent blockage/drainage issue

cheers for all the responses, this website is great. In no particular order: We got athe middle costing survey done but not a separate drain one (I spoke to everyone I know who has bought a house and none of them had so assumed it wasn't needed, lesson learnt). We are talking to our...

Help for basement bathroom: inherent blockage/drainage issue

Hi, we have just bought a basement flat and have now discovered there is an inherent problem with the waste flow from the bathroom that has meant we have had two blockages in a month. We have had dyno rod and another independent over and they have said this (along with a lot of negative...

bath won't drain, then sink and sometimes toilet

I tried the coiled wire drain unblocker, got about 2 metres in and nothing (couldn't get much further in as had already gone through 270 degrees of bends). All out of options so going to call a plumber. Cheers for the help

bath won't drain, then sink and sometimes toilet

Thanks for the quick reply, all I can see is that they go straight down so not sure where they go. Following the power plunger, the bath now drains quite well, although the toilet still bubbles so not sure what that means. In addition, I think the reason the hole where the bath waste pipe...

bath won't drain, then sink and sometimes toilet

Hi, I am pretty sure I know the problem (from reading the forums etc) but wanted some advice from those better experienced. My bathroom is in the basement of my flat and the bath is backing up, which leads to the sink then backing up. The layout (if this is relevant) is toilet, next to sink...

Leaking dishwasher when the sink is left running

Hi, if I leave the tap running in my kitchen sink, water backs up to the dishwasher and it fills up and then floods. I just wondered if anyone knew what was causing this problem before I go through the hassle of re plumbing it.

    Quick decking question

Hi, I just have two very quick decking questions as have almost completed my garden. I have screwed the decking down attaching it to every second joist (joists are spaced 40 cm apart) as I was running out of screws. Do I need to screw them down to all the joists, or is 80cm spacing enough...

    Some simple decking questions

One other question about shrinkage, surely this effects the length more than the width? But in the forums people only mention how it effects the gap inbetween decking planks?
