Loft conversion - Acoustic or thermal insulation (or both) between floors

Thanks Ian, I have 200mm to play with so I am thinking 100mm acoustic and as I have it anyway I may as well top it up with the Earthwool loft roll. Thing I cant work out is what the actual difference is, loft roll is very soft and wont hold its own weight. I was expecting the acoustic stuff to...

Loft conversion - Acoustic or thermal insulation (or both) between floors

Update - according to Knauff's own helpline, the Acoustic Roll 100mm meets building control, the Earthwool Loft Roll doesnt for use between floors. I am hard pushed to see the difference in the 2 products to be honest. Their density per M/2 is very similar...

    Reboarding "new" ceilings

Slight change, my local TPs only has 1800 x 900 12.5mm in stock. Given my joists are on 450mm centers does it really matter apart from a couple more butt joints.

Installing an RSJ - Looking for Advice on how to install

Be worth asking BC about steel size, when I did my kitchen / diner knock through my BC guy advised what to install and signed it off once fitted. If a SE calc is needed, about £80 approx per calc if its simple. I put my pad stones in first but you must let the mortar go off for a few days...

Hi all, Quick one, some of you may know I'm doing most of the work on my loft conversion on my bungalow. I have taken down all the ceilings and have new floor/ceiling structure ready to plasterboard. Question is should I be knocking off a bit of wall plaster so the ceiling boards sit 'into'...

    8x4 chipboard for flooring

My new floor joists for my loft are 8 x 2 at 400 centers, wooden noggins screwed not nailed, and 22mm sheets of Egger Protect laminated board. They are about £10 a sheet well worth it. Glued and screwed at 300mm intervals to keep BC happy.

Fixing joist wallplate to thermalite block - help !

Thanks chaps. Spoke to BC and Structural Eng, both happy for me to use 8 x 2 C16. Max span allowed is 3.85 and my longest is just less. Timber supplier was spot on and will let me swap. Some of it but not all was bent out twisted so will make sure no one looses out, them or me. He has done me...

Fixing joist wallplate to thermalite block - help !

Hi, longest span is about 3.8m but they are big joists, was specd by the architect. Extra noggins might not fix all of them, a length of 3.2 has a deflection of nearly half its width and a lot of them are twisted too..

Hip to gable - ceiling joist dilema

Hi everyone, solution in the end was to pull all the ceilings down and put the new floor joists direct onto the downstairs walls. Bit more work but will end up a better job plus I end up with better headroom in the loft conversion:)

Hip to gable - ceiling joist dilema

Quite right about scrim and I know from doing work in other rooms the bottom of the wall plate is about 2 to 3 inches below the ceiling height so it's going to mess up to walls which is ok I can fix that.

Hip to gable - ceiling joist dilema

Thanks for the replies much appreciated. Can't build on the timber building control won't allow it. I'm hoping my builder suggests I can trim the joists and remove all the wall plate. Cutting sections out of it it tricky to do without damaging the ceilings as it is.
