    Help to Identify Fitting

Thanks for the quick replies - I’ve never heard of MICC before. I’ll check it out to see if it’s live but I take it that it’s best to have it removed/replaces then?

    Help to Identify Fitting

Hi, I have a strange hybrid fitting which I can’t identify. It’s on the inside of my garage and there’s an SWA cable entering it from outside the building. There’s a 2.5mm cable (or a bit heavier) exiting the fitting and feeds a power and lighting circuit. Lastly, and here’s where it gets...

    Reinstating Original Building

Thanks for your replies everyone - much appreciated and I will definitely give it a good go :)

    Reinstating Original Building

I just meant that it if I was allowed to rebuild anything at all, I doubt I’d be required to reinstate it as an ale house. And why just tempt fate when you can taunt it? :)

    Reinstating Original Building

Thanks for the replies - I’ll try and speak to the local conservation officer and I was able to view some maps and see where the original buildings were (I’ve seen references to that site before but always assumed it wouldn’t be relevant as it’s Scottish but actually is a great resource for the...

    Reinstating Original Building

Hi, I recently bought a house which has a large garden. The property has a history going back to the 1700s and is within a conservation area (it isn’t listed). Having done some research, I’ve discovered that there was once an ale house/dwelling at the very bottom of the garden and I’m now...

Chrome Straight Towel Radiator Valve Leaking

I bought a pair of valves fully intending to replace the leaking one. As you can see from the picture, I don't think any amount of extra tightening or packing would do anything as it seems to seal with a simple o-ring: It would be nice if I could just insert a new assembly into the existing...

    Radiator Valve Fitting Identification

They are solid floors but that's interesting - how would I tee off through the wall? The house is a really odd example with two rooms having a lower floor than the rest of the house. Unfortunately, none of them are near a door so it's difficult to decide where to place the drain cock - but your...

    Radiator Valve Fitting Identification

It's an open vented system (cylinder in the bathroom and two tanks in the loft) but I don't feel confident (experienced enough) about relying on a vacuum - the worse case scenario always applies when I'm doing anything ;) The system hasn't had any maintenance for at least ten years so I think I...

    Radiator Valve Fitting Identification

Thanks - I've bought one of those and there's a YouTube video of a guy demonstrating how to use one. It's a bit ugly though so I agree that replacing it with something a bit nicer is the way to go.

Chrome Straight Towel Radiator Valve Leaking

I guess I shouldn't try and undo the main body of the central section then? The bit which I've already undone doesn't seem to do anything when I tighten it and the PTFE didn't work. I don't anticipate opening it too often but it does look like I'll need to replace it. I think it looks...

    Radiator Valve Fitting Identification

Thanks for the replies :) I did suspect it was something like that but assumed it wasn’t as it doesn’t look like there’s much to attach a hose to. I wouldn’t like to drain more than the one radiator with it. Unfortunately, it’s an upstairs radiator and there doesn’t seem to be any drain-off...

    Radiator Valve Fitting Identification

Hi, Can anyone tell me what the following radiator valve fitting is? It's located between the radiator and the lock shield valve - it seems to have a screw in the top but I've no idea what it's for as I've never seen one before. Any ideas? Thanks :)

Chrome Straight Towel Radiator Valve Leaking

Hi, My towel radiator valve is leaking from the centre where it screws in rather than from the pipe or radiator joints. I've seen plenty of articles/videos on how to use a "string" of PTFE to pack a gland on a standard radiator valve but I can't find anything on these now common towel radiator...

    Replacing 170 Year-old Floorboards - Planer/Thicknesser?

I just looked at the B&Q web site and they're quoting £16 for an 18mm 194mm 2m board. I can't do any manual work at the moment so I'm looking at costs and what jobs need doing - it's just that the more I hear about what a planer/thicknesser can do, the more I think it may prove useful. It's just...

    Replacing 170 Year-old Floorboards - Planer/Thicknesser?

Thanks - I’ll keep that in mind. The repairs may only be temporary as we may have some extension work done yet depending on how things go but agreed, I would like to have them refinished and polished as opposed to carpet or overlaying with a wooden floor.

    Replacing 170 Year-old Floorboards - Planer/Thicknesser?

Thanks for the replies :) I did take in a couple of boards to a timber yard but came out with 20mm thickness as they were the closest. I considered a planer thicknesses as there’s lots to do in the house including repair of several parquet floors and the Titan TTB579PLN (cheap at £160) seems...

    Replacing 170 Year-old Floorboards - Planer/Thicknesser?

Hi, I need to replace some badly damaged floorboards in two of my bedrooms. The house is 170 years old and the boards are original. I would like to scour the reclamation yards to find something appropriate but that would take too long, the sizes are probably impossible to match exactly and most...

    WC Connector Upside Down?

Thanks for the quick replies :) OK - a plinth is very possible. The bathroom will need re-doing fairly soon anyway so I'm not worried about the plinth looking "less than ideal" as long as the loo works properly. I can't believe someone fitted it like that

    WC Connector Upside Down?

Hi, My toilet has a leak from the (offset) waste connector but I've been told it's upside down. If that's right, I assume that the soil pipe will need to be moved down vertically so that it's either inline with the WC connector or below it - is that correct? Thanks :)
