Surfaces to render on (surfaces on which to render)

Apart from masonry walls, are there board alternatives that will accept sand and cement render (exterior)? If so, is there much prep required or can I screw the boards to a timber frame and crack on? Its for a 3.2m long parapet wall, 5 courses high.

Getting ready to mix and pour a foundation

I just used a local-ish form who not only mix as required on site but then barrow it for you.....2.5m done in half an hour. I had to do the levelling and make the tea. same price as doing it myself. recommend you keep looking.

CH pipes in new floor slab

Soon I'll be pouring a floor slab for the kitchen extension. Reading around online there seems to be all sorts of advice regarding how to run CH pipes in the floor - is there a definitive way of doing it? I was planning on fitting a plastic pipe or suitable conduit wide enough for me to run 10mm...

Can I protect steel lintels - we live by the sea

Looking at two long lintels for my extension....I gather that stainless is the way to go, as we live a stone's throw from the sea, but the cost difference is huge. Is there nothing I could coat standard steel cavity wall lintels with to protect them instead?

Pre-installing floor dpm....slab not laid for while

For reasons of family sanity, what I'd like to do is build up the walls for the new conservatory in advance of taking the old (smaller) one down. However that means I cant pour the floor slab until later on. Is it feasible and, indeed, satisfactory, to incorporate a strip (skirt) of 1200...

Minimum thickness of an extension roof with slates

I have been considering EcoSlates, partly because the say they can be used with shallow pitches. They go onto an OSB roof. How would you say a more conventional roof structure be waterproofed for normal slates? Advice gratefully received.

Thicky question on rigid insulation and brick ties

That may be so, yes, though I have only seen 8x4 sheets

Thicky question on rigid insulation and brick ties

Putting rigid insulation on inner skin of block wall. How to fit it when there's brick ties sticking out? Inner is thermalite. Do I just push the boards so the ties poke through, or somehow fit them after? As I said, undoubtedly a thicky question.

    Corner blockwork bond pattern....

When building a cavity wall in blockwork, does it matter on the relative positions of the perps in the inner and outer skins? That is, is either of these bonds preferable (or neither!)?
