    Cylinder Bypassed

I had a cylinder in an airing cupboard that was bypassed and removed a few years ago when I had a combi fitted. There are 2 x 22mm pipes which are now joined together- i assume flow and return from boiler. But there is also a 15 mm pipe that is tee'd into the 22mm pipe - the 15 mm has a...

Moving gas pipe - over or under drainage

Cadent are moving my gas service pipe in a week, but I'm doing the digging. I've dug the trench today, and have found a clay pipe running through it. Do u think the gas service pipe will have to run under this, or over it? Over is still 400 mm below ground. On the pic, its gonna be turned...

    1st floor joists

Whats the advantages/disadvantages of building first floor joists into the walls, vs timber wall plates with joists hangers..... I assume hangers off a timber wall plate is simpler, but are there any downsides......

    New walls meeting existing detailing.

That pic was from LABC website..... I wasn't sure (for the reason u just gave), hence me asking here. I've never done one before, so was just trying to find out what's acceptable Once did it on a porch, and just ground a 50mm slot in the house wall.... it worked fine, but no building inspector

    New walls meeting existing detailing.

I'm having a 2 storey side extension. Where the new walls meet the existing corner of the house, is this an acceptable way to join the two together...... If it is, what width would the vertical cut normally be and is there a particular product that is used as an insulated dpc? The new walls...

Plugging 32mm knock out in CU

The meter tails have been moved from the top of my consumer unit to the side. This has left the 32mm knockout on top, open. Is there a simple fitting that I can use to blank it back off? I've used the smaller blanking plugs on surface mounted boxes, but can't find one for a 32mm hole.

    Drainage Experts....

The problem was, the junction was 7 meters upstream from the manhole, so he couldn't turn the camera to get it up the pipe

    Drainage Experts....

Thinking about it, there is a pressed concrete path down the side of the house above where this pipe is coming from. I'm wondering if a drain has been covered over and is letting surface water in. There is a small grid in the back garden that the kitchen waste water runs into and this flows...

    Drainage Experts....

I'm not on a water meter, but I turned the water off at the stop clock and the water carried on flowing. Its 1970 house - no major works have been carried out. Im planning an extension and the footing will run perpendicular to this mystery pipe, hence my trying to figure it out. The drains at...

    Drainage Experts....

Wasn't raining at the time, but its honked it down for days. Can't understand why surface water would be run into drain though. The only property that it could be coming from (from the direction of the pipe) is the one that turned their water off for me to check and it made no difference.

    Drainage Experts....

I had a CCTV inspection done of the sewer and drains at the back of my house. I have attached a pic and a sketch if the layout. It was all pretty much as expected until he found an unexpected branch. Basically, there are two waste drains that connect into a sewer via a manhole in the garden...

    Brick bonding question

Not sure...... might be to accommodate the weight and movement of the garage door..... plus having something solid to fix the door to in the right place

    Brick bonding question

Well the entire outside wall of the garage and the return thats currently there is a 9 inch solid wall that's been there since 1970 and there's never been any damp, so I think it'll be ok. And I'm considering an insulated stud wall to seperate the garage from the inhabitable space at the rear...

    Brick bonding question

A quick one for the brickies.... garage cavity wall with 1 brick thick solid wall return to the door. How is the inner block work fixed to the return..... he circled red bit. Is it usually bonded in, or does it need a vertical dpc...... I'm wondering what the typical arrangement would be

    Structural steel bearings

    I've had some steel beams specd for a first floor cavity wall. The span is 3.42 m. Under the section titled 'Bearings' it reads: Bearings 203 x 102 x 23 UB stiff bearing length, b1 = t + 1.6r + 2T = 36.2 mm; O/A b 1 taken as 138 mm taken as 138 mm..... If so, I assume...
